La Salle beats Ateneo

I woke up late since I just my graveyard shift ended at seven o'clock this morning. I was browsing through the local channels to see if any show would catch my interest. I finally ended up switching my TV to studio 23 which was airing a live UAAP game between Ateneo and La Salle. I am not really a big fan of UAAP Basketball since my Almamater, Letran, is with the the other collegiate basketball League. But watching Ateneo and La salle battle for supremacy is like watching a championship game. Emotions are up in the air as usually even though this just their first match up of the season.

I am not familiar with the line up of both teams. The last time I was really following the Ateneo-La Salle rivalry was back then when Mike Cortez, Mac Mac Cardona and Enrico Villanueva was still playing for their respective schools. But it is never disappointing to watch the two schools battle each other in the hard court.

Majority of the coaches in the UAAP favor the De la Salle Green Archer. Despite losing veteran players in their line up, the rookies and sophomore players are stepping up. Ateneo on the other hand is banking on their experience to beat their rivals. The great about this rivalry is that statistics does really matter when they face each other. It all about school pride. They seem to be playing with a higher purpose when they face each other.

When I starting tuning in to the game, there was only a few minutes left in the game with Ateneo in the lead with 7 points. It seems that Ateneo was on their way to bagging the win, but La salle made two back to back to three pointers which started their late. 17seconds left in game and Ateneo was down by three with the ball possession with Ateneo. The Ateneo Blue eagles tried to tie the game to force overtime but failed on two attempts beyond the three point mark. Final score is 66-63 in favor of La Salle. La Salle has now has a Win-loss record of 3-1 and has the solo second place while the defending champion Ateneo drops to fifth place.

Mayweather ignores November 13 deadline

Despite months of Negotiation between Manny Pacquiao and Floyd Mayweather Jr, Pacquiao would have to settle for Mexican Antonio Margarito or Puerto Rican Miguel Cotto. Top rank promoter Bob Arum, has given Mayweather a deadline for the propose November 13 fight but Mayweather decided ignore the deadline and take time off from boxing.

I just don’t get it. After coming out of retirement, he fought only twice just to retire again? Was it all for the money? I don’t think it’s about glory. If it is, he should have chosen to fight tougher boxers. He is all talk. He keeps on saying that he is the best fighter but refuses to fight the only person that fuels the doubt of his so called supremacy in the ring. The only thing that he could brag about is his undefeated record other than that nothing.

So why did he dictate all those ridiculous demands like the Olympic style drug testing or the unreasonable share with the revenues of the fight? I guess he didn’t expect that Pacquiao would agree on the terms. Now he is left with an excuse of retiring just to keep him perfect record unblemished.

It’s a shame though. It could have been an historic fight. Both fighters have the speed and power in their arsenal. Now the question is who Pacquiao would face next.

Typhoon Basyang update

It's around 07:40 A.M. My graveyard shift has just ended. I am on my way but decided to browse the net for a couple of minutes. It is not raining as much and the winds have settled down. Since classes for Elementary to High school level were suspended in Metro Manila, Traffic is not that heavy.

I have received several calls from some of my colleagues that there are minor flooding in Bulacan. You see one of my duties is to receive call regarding absence notification. Another caller told me that several trees were uprooted while broken tree trunks were scattered along the streets in Paranaque.I really can't confirm it now since there is no TV here in our office.

Several parts of Luzon are without power since 1100 p.m last night. The strong winds have damage several equipment of Power corporation and is now a big burden for a lot of Filipinos. Luckily the office has a alternate power supply.

It would be difficult to sleep now that there is an ongoing power interruption. I hope that it won't last that long. Good thing it is still quite windy, I might able to get some sleep without an electric fan. But if becomes Sunny later, the heat would really be a problem.  I'll try to get home now and get some shut eye. I hope they restore power when I get home.

First typhoon of the year enters the Philippines

Typhoon Basyang (International name Conson) was forecasted to entered the country on July 13, 2010. As of 11 p.m. (Manila time) of the same day, typhoon Basyang’s center has hit Infanta, Quezon. Basyang is expected to reach central Luzon on Wednesday and leave the country by Thursday. Storm signal number was 1 was already raised in Catanduanes, Camarines sur, Marinduque, Nueva Vizcaya, Isabela, Ifugao, Benguet, La union and the rest of Quezon province. Signal number 2 was declared in the province of Camarines Norte, Northern Quezon, Rizal, Aurora, Nueva Ecija, Cavite, Lubang Island, Laguna, Batangas, Bataan, Pampanga, Zambales, Tarlac, Pangasinan, Bulacan, and Metro Manila. Classes of students in pre-school to high schools level were suspended by the Department of Education in provinces under signal number 2.

Afternoon Classes in Metro Manila were suspended. The Philippine Coast guard has already advised ships en route to Manila to dock in the nearest port. International flights were also advised to divert due to poor visibility due to the heavy rains.

At least 20 typhoons enter the country every year. The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical, and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) has forecasted that the only 13 to 15 tropical storm would enter the Philippines this year. This should be goods news; however the weather bureau expects that tropical storms would stronger in intensity.

This officially marks the beginning of the typhoon season in the Philippines. Filipinos fear that the typhoon may cause landslide and flooding. Last year two powerful entered the country which has caused massive flooding and destruction to infrastructure. Typhoon Ondoy and Peping enter the country last September and October respectively. These two typhoons claimed the lives of more the 1000 people. The weather bureau said that Basyang was only tropical storm but it has intensified and was classified as typhoon a few hours ago.

It is unfortunate that I am writing this while I am in the office. I am on my Graveyard shift and how I wish I am  home in the comfort of my bed. The winds are so strong that I could hear it whistling. The rain is not as strong now but it was really pouring when I was on my way to the office. I hope that this typhoon would not be as strong as Ondoy. Last year I was not able to go to work due to the massive flooding. My wife on the hand was at her mall based workplace in SM north EDSA. The high amount of rainfall has caused the flooding of their basement making it inaccessible. She was also stranded for a couple of hours since the route that she has to take to get home was already flooded. Taxis, jeepney and bus service were also unavailable. Fortunately one of her officemates resides somewhere near our home and she was able to get a ride.

Nueva Vizcaya approves Smoking ban

Governor Luisa Cuaresma, a known smoker, recently signed an ordinance banning smoking in public places and transportation. Under the new ordinance violators would be fine PHP 1,500 for the first offense, second time offenders would be fine PHP 2,500 and PHP 5,000 would be imposed for third time offenders. For those who could not afford the payment of this fine would be subjected to community service.

Private establishments or franchisees of public conveyances that violates this ordinance would find their license revoked or suspended depending on the mode of their violation. Posters and billboards of cigarette advertisements have already been removed from certain establishment.  Ashtrays in public workplace as well as installation of “No smoking signs” in prohibited areas would be put up once the ordinance has been fully implemented. The Municipal health offices in Nueva Vizcaya are providing help through their Smoking Cessation Program (SCP).

Under the constitution, there are laws that prohibit smoking in public places as in any mode of transportation. Section 24 of Republic Act (RA) 8749 or the Philippine Clean Air Act of 1999 prohibits smoking inside enclosed public places and public vehicles. Local government units are directed by law to implement the provision. Section 5 of RA 9211 or the Tobacco Regulation Act of 2003 prohibits smoking in certain public places whether enclosed or outdoors like centers of youth activity, public facilities, and public conveyances.

This is ordinance would be a great way to minimize carbon emission and would be beneficial to residents of Nueva Viscaya. It all comes down to implementation. Laws against smoking in public places have been in place for quite some time. And yet the implementation of the law is still not evident. It all comes down to the will to implement this law. Wouldn’t it be great for the Philippines to be as smoke free like Singapore? This would be beneficial for the well being of the environment and people’s health

Proposal for creation of Environmental Protection Agency

Senator Juan Miguel Zubiri filed a bill on July 7, 2010 proposing the creation of an Environmental Protection agency (EPA) which would focus specifically on the country’s growing problem on pollution. The purpose of the new agency is conduct detailed research on Air pollution, water hazards, solid waste disposal, radiation and pesticides. The agency is also tasked to monitor and implement solution on how to minimize if not eradicate the pollution problems of the country.

The Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) function is the implement government’s law on environment and the proper management of the country’s natural resources. The new agency would be responsible for establishing and enforcing environmental protection standards. They would also be tasked to advise the president and the congress on the enactment of laws which would deal with environmental protection and conservation of natural resources. Senator Zubiri said that the new agency would solely deal with matters that have a relation only to the protection, preservation and enhancement of the environment. They would also create specific rules and regulation for the control of water, air and land pollution.

Knights win 1st game in Season 86

After losing the first two games, the Letran Knights have prevented a 0-3 (win-loss) standing this Season.  The Muralla based team won against Perpetual Help Altas to acquire their first win of the season. Franz Dyzam lead the team in scoring with 21 points. Dyzam incidentally is a transferee from Perpetual Help. The game ended with 87-69 scorecard favoring Letran.

Defense is the key for Letran's win who out rebounded Perpetual garnering 53 boards against Altas' 44. The turnover of the team decrease to 17 this game. Letran averages 22 turn overs this season. Kevin Alas, who was not able to play during the opening game due to a hamstring injury, scored 14 points to help seal the win. This win ties Letran with Arellano University Chiefs with 1 win and 2 loss team standing.

Letran has to rely on this new breed of Knights to win games as their two of their top gunners, Rey Guevarra and Rj Razul have already graduated. We still have to see what Victor Jay "VJ" Espiritu, a rookie from Carson High school (the school where Mike Cortez and Mark Cardona came from) has to offer.

Here is a video of the one of the episode of The Big Bang theory

PCG failed to identify people responsible for Oil spill in Batangas

The Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) has failed to pinpoint the people responsible for the oil spill in the Batangas shoreline. The Oil spill threatens the livelihood of over 91,000 people living in Calatagan. This oil spill would not only hurt their pockets (fishing is the primary source of income in Calatagan) but also their tummy as they really on the fish they caught for food.

Local fishers discovered the oil spill that is measured 80 meters by 4 meters. The disaster has already affected a declared fish sanctuary and a mangrove forest. The Haligi ng Batangueñong Anakdagat (Habagat) and the Pambansang Lakas ng Kilusang Mamamalakaya ng Pilipinas (Pamalakaya) have expressed their dismay on the PCG’s effort to indentify and apprehend the people responsible for this oil spill. How do you minimize the use of plastic?

Gone are the days where Filipinos bring their bayong ( a traditional woven basket) to the market and used it to bring home their purchases. Instead supermarket are now using plastic bags. Everything is plastic. The basic needs that we use on a daily basis are in packaged in plastic. From your three in one coffee to your take out order from your favorite fast food, everything involves plastic. The problem with plastic is that it doesn’t dissolve. So everyday the pile of plastic collected from the garbage is getting higher.  Last year the floods that country experienced is not entirely because of the typhoon. The poor garbage disposal is also a big factor that lead to massive flooding in the Philippines. Plastic and other garbage clogged the sewage and leads to the flooding.

So how do we minimize the use of plastic? These are some useful tips
1.       1. Use reusable or recyclable plastic packaging
2.       2. When your taking out food and plan to eat home, don’t ask for the plastic utensils. When buying your cup of Joe from your favorite coffee shop just bring your own mug. I think some coffee house offers incentive if you bring your own mug when purchasing their products.
3.       3. Use a fabric bag when going to purchase your grocery. Every time I go to SM north EDSA and purchase my groceries, I use the fabric bag and it doubles my reward point. Every Wednesday, the hypermarket in SM north EDSA would not put your groceries in plastic bag but they use paper bags instead. If you wish to purchase your plastic bag,  you would have additional charges.
4.       4. If you’re buying single item, you don’t to ask for the plastic bag. Instead you could put your purchases in your bag or your pocket assuming that the item is not that bulky. This would help a lot in trying to minimize the use of plastic.
5.       5. Use the plastic bag you have collected and use them as trash bags. Maximize the use of trash bag. Don’t throw it when it is not that full yet.

Small steps would go a long way. The more plastic that we use, the more trees that we cut down. President Benigno Aquino III has declared support on banning single use plastic bags and other plastic based disposable containers during his campaign for presidency.

El Niño phenomenon still affects the country

Filipinos should have been enjoying the cool climate since the rain season has started last June. But we are still being tormented by the humid weather die to prolonged effects of El Niño. According to the Philippine atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Service administration (PAGASA) normally two tropical cyclones enter the country by the month of July which affects the province in the northern part of Luzon. According to weather bureau, by this time three tropical cyclones should have struck the country but only one has been recorded so far. Tropical Cyclone Agaton is the only cyclone that has entered the Philippines this year.

The country would experience cloudy weather with isolated thunderstorms and rain showers this month. In the next 3 to 5 days the bureau expects that no tropical cyclone would enter the country. PAGASA has also forecasted that the country would receive below normal amount of rain fall. But this is not a reason to celebrate. The weather Bureau expects that stronger tropical cyclones would enter the country during the third and fourth quarter of the year.

Which team will Lebron James play in?

LeBron James,NBA,Gripe A

Now that the Lebron James’ contract with Cavaliers has just ended, NBA fans are eager to know which team will sign in. The Cleveland Cavaliers are still trying to retain his service off course but fans in Chicago, New Jersey, New York, and Miami are hoping that the reigning MVP would consider signing in their team. Two big names in the NBA who are currently free agents are trying to recruit James. Both Dwayne Wade and Chris Bosh have committed to Miami Heat and are trying to enlist James. Having James, Wade and Bosh in Miami would strengthen their bid to win the championship this coming season. If in case Miami fails to acquire James, they are looking into the possibility of acquiring Andre Miller of Portland Trail Blazers.

Other Big names in NBA who might be up for grabs is Ray Allen, Tyson Chandler, Richard Jefferson, Joe Johnson, Tracy McGrady, Yao Ming and Michael Reed. Chris Bosh and Dwayne are also on the list. Though both players haven’t officially sign, both players told Lebron James that they committing with Miami. Amare was on the free agent list as well but has agreed to sign a $99.7 million dollar contact with Knicks for five years. The 2011 free agent’s list also has a lot of big names. Carmelo Anthony, Caron Butler, Tim Duncan, Tony Parker, David West and Tayshaun Prince might be sign be with different teams in the future.

One second late for work

Life is about winning battles every single day. It doesn’t matter how small or big it is. Everybody is fighting their own battle every single day. It may be beating your own sleepiness in the morning to get to work or school. Or it may be beating your own Laziness to get some work down.

My battle today is time. I woke up late and I was on the verge of being late for work. Normally it would only take 30 minutes to get prepared for work and an additional 30 minutes to get to work. But since I visited my parent’s place which is quite far from my workplace, I had to an additional hour to my travel time.

I was supposed in the office by seven in the morning. I woke up at around 04:30 in the morning but had to put the alarm in snooze mode five times. I finally got up at 04:50 in the morning. Since I was still half awake and half asleep in toke me 20 minutes taking a bath and an additional 10 minutes to dress up fix my hair. I took another 10 minutes to eat breakfast. So I was leaving my parent’s house at 05:30. I needed at one and a half to get to my workplace. Good thing the morning rush has not really started. There still a few people commuting. By the time I got to the MRT, it was around 06:31 am. I estimated that I need at least 25 minutes to travel but I was surprised that I got in station that I am supposed to alight at 06:50 am and had at least 10 minutes more.
I had to take another Jeepney ride to my office. It would only take at least two minutes to get to the office. The only problem is that I have to walk for at least 3 minutes to get to designated loading station. By 06:55 am, I was already in Jeepney waiting for it to depart. There was no traffic and I was confident that I would make in time.

There is only one thing that I didn’t count on. The driver of the Jeepney that I rode was really greedy. The driver would stop at place that isn’t even I designated pickup point. He made several stops that really lengthen my travel time. It was 06:59 then and I was only a few meters away from my workplace. I already told the driver that I was getting off. He ended up dropping me a few buildings away which required me to walk a short distance. I normally don’t mind walking but I was really trying to catch the time.

When I got to the office, I am ready punch in my time in. I was running then. I was still a few steps away from the security guard when I asked him the time. He replied that it was seven in the morning. I was relieved but my relief was taken from me as fast as I received it. Panting, I was about to clock in. It took less than a second for all my efforts to turn futile. As I was about to press the button, the clock registered 07:01 am. I swore louder than I had expected. Everyone turned and I just returned their bewildered look with an awkward smile.

It has been a habit for me to be tardy before. But I have changed that habit and have been rarely late in the last three years. Last year I was late only for three times and this year this is the first incident of tardiness. Seven months of being early went down the drain that Monday morning. I won’t feel this bad if I was late for 5 minutes or 10 minutes. Being late for a second would ruin anyone’s day. I would prefer being late for thirty minutes than being late for a second. I don’t know who to blame. I blame myself for waking up late and then again the Jeepney driver is also to blame. I just have to forget it. There is no point on blaming anyone. Damage has been done already.
