My thoughts on the proposed K-12

The government plans to put 2 additional years to the 10 year basic education. That current four year high school education will eventually become six years. The Department of Education (DEPED) plans to modify the current duration for high school to better prepare incoming college students with the skills that they would acquire their degree and be more competitive globally in the terms of Education.

I agree with the goal. I think it would be great improve the quality of education in the Philippines. But I have a lot of objections about it as well. A normal family could not afford the additional 2 years of education. You have to consider the additional cost for tuition fees, daily allowance, school supplies and educational trips.

You would also have to consider the Teachers. There is a shortage of Teachers especially in public schools now. There are inadequate number of classrooms and school facilities. How could DEPED solve this problem? Is this the only solution? If they indeed want to improve the quality of education, wouldn't it be better to modify the curriculum use in schools today?

Deped believes that GDP would increase by 2% and that it would be beneficial to society if their proposal is implemented. How sure are they that the GDP would increase? I think Filipino families would prioritize food before education.  A parent would rather ask his child to stop going to school rather than having no food on the table. Adding 2 more years in education would delayed a person from joining the workforce and thus delaying a person ability to earn. I think it would be okay if there is a sure Job waiting as soon as the student graduates. But nowadays jobs are getting hard to come by.

You also have to think about the yearly tuition fee increase.  If the government could somehow regulate the tuition fee increase then I guess the additional 2 years in high school would not be that bad. But tuition fee increase has been a problem for many years and no politician seem to bother to have an inquiry about it. Now that I have a kid of my own,  I wonder how much it would cost to send my kid to college. An education from a reputable school nowadays would cost around P20000 to P40000 per semester. That would surely increase. I wonder how many parents could afford to put their children to college 5, 10 or 20  years from now?

  2. They should focus first on the quality of education rather than merely adding up two years.
