The Last Airbender

When I first wrote about the movie adaptation on Avatar the last Airbender, I didn't have that much of an idea about the series that it is based upon. So I did my research and started watching the whole series and ended up finishing it in a week, I thought that the animated series is more suitable for young kids since it is from Nickelodeon. But after I finished watching all three seasons, I found out that it is a great series. Since the film is about to be released this July, I thought of updating my previous post. The film is an adaptation of first season of animated series. It is the first film of the trilogy based on the three seasons of the animated series
In the beginning of the story Katara, the only waterbender from the southern water tribe is honing her waterbending skills with her brother Sokka. They discovered a boy stuck in a big ball of ice. The boy is Aang, the last existing airbender from an extinct nomad tribe. Not only is he the last airbender but he is also the Avatar. The avatar has the power to control air, water, earth and fire. The Avatar also has the ability to access the knowledge of the past avatar. After waking up from a 100 year slumber, Aang realize that there was a war going on that was started by the Lord Ozai of the Fire nations. He also found out that his whole tribe was annihilated by the fire nation,

Aang was able to talk to his predecessor, Avatar Roku, and learned that he has to beat Lord Ozai before the sozin's comet arrives again. The comet would greatly enhance firebenders' powers. In order to beat Lord Ozai, Aang has to master all four elements starting with water. Since Katara is just beginning to learn waterbending herself, they decided to go to North Pole to learn water bending from waterbending master from the northern tribe. But Aang, Katara and Sokka faced a lot obstacle along the way. His biggest obstacle is Prince Zuko the banished prince of the fire nation and Fire nation’s admiral Zhao. Prince Zuko forced to exile by his own father Lord Ozai plans to capture the Avatar so that he may return home and regain his honor.

They eventually reached the North Pole and learned waterbending skills from   Master Pakku of the northern water tribe. Sokka will meet Princess Yue the daughter of Chief Arnook of the northern water tribe. Yue was once given some of the moon spirit’s energy when she was still a baby. Admiral Zhao caught up with Aang and an invasion fleet to attack the northern water tribe. Outnumbered, Aang seek the assistance of the Moon and ocean spirit to defeat the massive fire nation forces. But Admiral Zhao had beat Aang to the spirits. Zhao killed the mortal manifestation of the moon spirit which turned the moon red and rendering the water tribe powerless. Angered by Zhao’s action, Aang goes in to Avatar mode and merged with the ocean spirit and attacked the Fire navy’s fleet. In order to revive the moon spirit, Yue decided to sacrifice her life. The first season of the animated series ended with Fire Lord Ozai giving her daughter Princess Azula an order.

From what I have seen from the trailer, it seems that M. Night Shyamalan has stuck with the original plot of the movie. I might have seen Tuff the blind earthbender girl who will teach Aang earthbending. I’m not sure it is her though. It seems that we won’t see much of Aang’s cheerful side. Based on the trailer he seems so serious. I don’t see Sokka as the joker of the group. Fans have criticized the Shyamalan’s casting choices. Noah Ringer, the actor playing Aang seems fit in some ways to the role. He is a first degree black belt Taekwondo practitioner. Although I don't see him being jolly enough for the role. Maybe the theme of the story is serious and Shyamalan removed the comedy in the story. But I have to say that the is the reason why I enjoyed watching the series. Jackson Rathbone (Jasper in the Twilight Movies) also doesn't seem fit to play Sokka. Sokka is the Joker of the group and I don't see him cracking jokes. Nicola Peltz is playing Katara. In the animated series, Katara is the responsible one and was portrayed as motherly. I don't see how the actress playing her role acting motherly since she seems so young. Dev Patel of Slumdog Millionaire plays Prince Zuko. In the animated series, Prince Zuko is of Asian lineage. He doesn't look like Zuko at all. We just have to wait and see if they pull off playing their roles.

  1. You were right. It's already aired in the US. My sister said she watched it and she liked it. For someone who hasn't seen the animated series, she said it was a good watch. I think the negative feedback just comes from people who are already biased about M. Night's type of movies. The humor you see in the cartoons does add to the story's charm but I still think this adaptation will be boss despite its seriousness. People seem to forget that the creator of the series is actually American so choosing a predominantly American cast fits the bill. Like you said, though, we'll have to wait and see.
