Is your face sounds familiar Philippines a fair competition?

For the last 12 weeks I have been watching this show. And I am impressed with the performances. Well most of them at least. So why do I ask if your face sounds familiar is a fair competition? First of all. The producers seems to be biased with some of the artist. Tutti is always impersonating rock stars. Maxene is mostly impersonating rappers and Karla is always impersonating Divas. Most impersonators are given task that they are very well familiar with. While some them were given the hardest task of impersonating that others. I am talking about Nyoy, Edgar Allan and Melai who has been switching from male to female artist more frequently than other.

Second the contestants are not voting for the best performance but there are voting based on completely different criteria. A good example is for Maxene’ performance as her late father Francis M. I thought Melai’s Rihanna performance, Edgar Allan’s Ed Sheeran and Nyoy’s Sylvia la torre impersonation was better. Last week EA’s MC hammer, Nyoy’s Rod Stewart and Jayr’s Alanis Morrisette was better than Tutti’s Ely Buendia performance. I even thought that he was more Raymund Marasigan than Ely. I think they voted for him since he is the only one left without a win.

But to be fair, they made up for it with the revelation of the top 4 finalist. I think Nyoy, Jay-r, Melai and Edgar Allan all deserve to be part of the top 4. Then again the Grand winner will be based on the highest text votes where the most popular but not always the most deserving ends up winning.

 What are your thoughts?

Your face sounds familiar Finale airs tonight

Last Sunday, the top 4 for your face sounds familiar Philippines has been announced. Nyoy Volante got the highest score with 257 points.  Jay-r got the second place with 246 points. Melai and Edgar Allan are both tied for the third and fourth spot.

I am glad that the two of my picks are part of the Final four which is Nyoy and Edgar Allan. Next week on the finale, the winner will be decided with the highest number of text votes which in my opinion wouldn’t be fair for the contestant. Why? History has shown with shows like American Idol or the Voice that the deserving contestant doesn’t usually end up bagging the title.

I hope they would change the criteria to 50% judge’s vote and 50% text voting. This way at least those without a huge fan base wouldn’t end up winning. Remember Voice Philippines last two winners? Since Sarah Geronimo has a huge fan base, her team ended up with the win.

Well will see. I kind of reminds of the pageants way back in high school those who manage to sell more tickets ended up winning even though they are not clearly to most talented and most deserving.

My vote is for Nyoy. Since the start of the show, Nyoy has been consistent with his performance and I am glad that he ended getting votes from his co-contestant last week. My second choice would be for Edgar Allan.

Wondered why Tuition Fee increase is so rampant in Philippines?

Photo taken from Rappler.com
In a few weeks the new school year is about to begin. Students are excited but not all parents are. Most parents especially those with children in private schools would have to pay high tuition fees. Does high quality of education means high cost?

A college student would have to take more of units (subjects) during their freshmen year. The units would lessen as the students progress with his education. Ideally when the number of units taken by a college students decreases, the their tuition fee would decreases as well. But that is not what is happening.

Based on my experience, I took 30 units on my freshmen year. Tuition fee was around Php16,000 then. That was in 1996. During my senior year, I was only enrolled to around 16 units but paying the same amount that I was paying during my freshmen year. So every year although I was enrolling to less number of units, my parents were paying the same amount. Right now the tuition fee in my Alma mater is ranging from  Php 60,000 to  Php 75,000 per semester. I wondered how much it would cost after another 10 years?

So why is this all happening? In 1982 the president then, Ferdinand Marcos signed the Education of 1982. Basically it gave Private Educational institutions free reign on the tuition fee increase. A commercialization of Philippine Educational System sort to speak. A few years later the Government created the Commission on Higher Education (CHED). One of the purpose of CHED is to approve the tuition fee increase of educational institution. But as we all know, they are not doing a good job in regulating it.

Educational institution claims that 70% of the tuition fee increase goes to the teachers and the rest would go to upgrading of the school's facilities. If that were true how come many teachers a going abroad to work as domestic helpers or would take a job on a different field?

So should we blame Marcos for the enactment of this law? I think we should but I think the blame should also fall on all the succeeding leaders for turning a blind eye to what is happening with Philippine Education System. If they continue to ignore this issue I am afraid that several years from now Filipinos would encounter the same problems as we are facing now.

Just to clear things up. I am not an activist. I am just another parent who would face the same difficulty that my parents did. My child has just started to go to school. 10 to 15 years from now I wonder how much it would cost to provide a great quality of education?

What are your thoughts?

Here is what is wrong with your face sounds familiar Philippines

Your face sounds familiar is based on Spanish singing and impersonation competition. If you have seen your face sounds familiar Philippines you would agree that it’s a great show. Here is the problem. The deserving contestant doesn’t end up winning. Why? I’ll discuss that in a bit.
Shows like the Voice and American Idol have the same problem. The deserving ones doesn’t end up winning. For the Voice the winner is based on the number of text votes from the public. And for the past two seasons I thought that the runner up deserve to win. For the voice kids I thought Darren Espanto would win instead of Lyca and Alisah Bonaobra deserved to be the winner instead Jason Dy from the Voice Philippines season 2.
So what is the use of joining if the winner won’t be based on pure talent? So here is the problem with your face  sounds familiar. Although the winner is not based on text votes, the winner is determine based on the votes of the  3 Judges and the votes of their peers.
I think the three judges are mostly fair with their votes. It’s just that during week 7 where Maxene impersonated her father, the late Francis M, they seem to have voted based on their emotional attachment to Francis M. She ended up winning but is she the best impersonator for that week? I really think that there were better performances compared to Maxene’s.
But here is the main problem. Aside from the Judges vote, the impersonators could give 3 points as long as they don’t give it to themselves. And there seems to be a group that is bias with their voting. Karla Estarda, Jay R, Maxene and sometimes Melai are most of time giving the votes to each other.
A good example is Week 8 where Karla Estrada won when she impersonated Ann Wilson of Heart. I thought that Edgar Allan Guzman (impersonated Andrew E) or Nyoy Volante (impersonated Freddy Mercury of Queen) would win it. Before the impersonator’s vote were mentioned, Edgar Allan and Nyoy were leading. But Karla Estrada ended up winning. Is it because her sons was there during the show? Or should we expect automatic votes from here group?
If this goes on I highly doubt that the most talented impersonator would win. So in your opinion who is the most talented impersonator? I'll go with Nyoy or Edgar Allan. What are your thoughts?

Pilipinas Gilas loses to Argentina

Who would have thought a few years back that the Philippines would be able to compete in the FIBA Basketball world cup? Everyone thought that it would take the Philippines a few more years to qualify. But they surprise everyone. For the first time in nearly 4 decades, the Philippines would be able to compete against the top basketball teams around the world.

When they qualified last year everyone thought they Philippines would be a push over. But we were proven wrong again. Then number 34 seed Philippines faced the world's number 3 Argentina. Argentina has the advantage in size and experience. We thought it would be blow out. We were proven wrong yet again.

Philippines made sure that they wouldn't go down fighting. The Philippines got a lead as high as 10 points during the first half of the game.In was three beyond the arc for both teams. De Ocampo and Alapag had the most 3 points shot for Gilas. Norwood had a great performance that night. The highlight of his performance for the that game was 2 slam dunk in the face of NBA superstar Luis Escola.

A few seconds left in the game and the score was 83 to 81 in favor of Argentina. Castro tried to tie the game or get the lead with a three point shot. However he failed to release the ball and was call for the traveling. In the end the Philippines fell short. Final score was 85 to 81 favoring Argentina.

Despite not having won any games in the FIBA Basketball world cup this year, I am very impressed with Philippines' performance. Considering it has been nearly 4 decades since the Philippines last qualified they are doing quite well. What I mean is that I was expecting that could not go head to head with bigger teams in FIBA. But it hasn't been a walk in the park for the opposing team. Crotia only won by 3 points, Greece by 12 points and today Philippines lost by 4 points. That something to be proud of. I was honestly expecting Philippines to lose by 20 or more points each game but I am dead wrong.
Next they face Puerto Rico. I hope they do get their 1st win against Puerto rico

Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) sells goods to typhoon survivors

Two weeks after Typhoon Yolanda (international name Haiyan) hit Tacloban, the social media has been flooding with disturbing news on how the Philippine government has been handling the rescue operations and dispersement of relief goods. I personally don't believe everything that I hear on the news. But some stories has been aired on TV network GMA, ABS-CBN and even CNN.

This is one news I saw in ireport.cnn.com that has bothered me. the Department of trade and industry (DTI) is selling basic goods. The Diskwento Caravan, as DTI calls it, is selling bread, coffee, milk and processed meat with discount ranging from 10% to 30% from the original price.

Here is my question. Where did all the donations from foreign countries go? Total donations from foreign country has totalled to 200 million US dollars. Are you telling me that all the money is .now all gone? This is disturbing news. I also heard in the news ABS CBN was airing that the government prohibited donors from giving milk to survivors since the Department of Health (DOH) is promoting breast milk. WTF?! Pardon my language but this news is very disgusting. And if DOH is promoting breast milk, why is DTI selling milk?

Weird signage along EDSA

This is one of the weirdest signs that I have seen here in the Philippines. As I was on my way to the office I saw this sign along Epifanio De los Santos Avenue (commonly known as EDSA),  In English it means "Do not cross. Somebody already died here". If the message is not clear enough, I don't what is.

Is the rainy season finally here?

Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) has forecasted that the rainy season would come during the last week of May or the first week of June. So when it rained hard today it me wonder if the rainy season is really here.

The afternoon rain shower was a sweet escape from the relentless summer heat. There is only one problem. The rains may have brought Filipinos relief from the heat but it also brought another burden – Traffic. I took only a few minutes of rain to cause minor flooding in the streets in Metro Manila.

I was on my way to the office when it rained. It felt rely good to be outdoors. The cold breeze was so soothing compared to the hot and humid wind that Filipinos have been enduring since the El Nino Phenomenon kicked in a few months ago. I had to take a detour that added an additional twenty minutes to my travel time. The route that I usually take was packed with vehicles which are barely moving. I was able to make it in time for my shift though.

A local network has reported that rains where not an indication that the rainy season is finally here. But they said that it would only take a few more weeks till the summer season ends. I have hoped for months that the El Nino ends sooner. But the rainy seasons will bring a lot problem as well. It may not be as hot as it has been in the last few months, but disease like Dengue and the swine flu might emerge. Filipinos also fears that the storm like Ondoy (International name Ketsana) would hit the Philippines. The powerful storm has caused severe flooding which has claimed so many lives and destruction a lot of structures.

So if you ask me if I want to the rains to come. Definitely! But I also hope that the government has made preparations for the rainy season. I hope that the drainage system is better prepared to avoid flooding. And I hope that preparations have been made for the swine flu virus and Denque.

El Nido gears up to protect the environment

El Nido is taking steps in protecting their environment. The municipal government has implemented an Eco-Tourism Development Fee (ETDF) in which tourist will pay P200 while people who are not resident of EL Nido Palawan will pay P100 while Php50 for students. Payment of this fee would provide tourist 10 day access to tourism sites within El Nido.

The funds acquire from the ETDF would be allocated to resource rehabilitation, solid waste management, tourism development and environmental protection. Other proceeds of the funds would be allocated to the certain projects like barangay coastal resource management and watershed projects.

The El Nido municipality is also taking steps in removing a large sea star known as crowns of tourns which preys on the coral polyps. They are also on the process of training of tour guides on ecology and are enforcing strict policy on the how many people are allowed in certain tourist spots.

This is a very big step in protecting the environment especially now that Global warming is worsening. You may think the coral beds are safe from the planet’s heat because they are submerged under water but guess again. The increase in sea surface temperatures causes bleaching of corals. From 1997 to 1998, an El Nino event has caused severe damage to the country’s coral bed. Every small step in lessening the planet’s carbon dioxide goes a long way.

Guimaras at risk of a meter increase in sea level.

The effects of Global warming are becoming a big threat not to Guimaras alone but the whole province of Iloilo as well. According to the Climate Change commission (CCC), a total of 8647 hectares of Iloilo province is at risk of a one-meter sea level increase. Why is the sea level increasing? It is because of the rapid melting of the planet’s glacier due to Global warming.

A study by University of Philippines Los Baños has stated that the three most vulnerable to a one meter sea level rise are Cagayan, followed by Palawan and then Palawan. Global warming also causes the increase in frequency and intensity of storms which would hit the Philippines.

The Philippines has been pleading for more developed countries to cut down carbon dioxide emission since the Kyoto Protocol to lessen the increase in the destructive storms that are caused by Climate change. The extreme weather anomalies like the drought in the Philippines, has already caused the destruction of million pesos worth of crops. Last year Typhoon Ondoy has caused the destruction of infrastructure and property. Now that the rainy season is coming, Filipinos are wondering if another Ondoy will hit the country. One thing is for sure, everybody has to do their part to mitigate the effects of Global warming.

Droughts affects the summer capital of the Philippines

Baguio City, the summer capital of the Philippines, is normally an escape for Filipinos against the summer heat. But since drought is currently ravaging the country, the mercury level of the thermometer may reach 31 degrees Celsius in the coming days according to Wilson Locando, a weather specialist from the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Administration (PAGASA).

On April 6, 2010, the temperature rose as high as 29.1 degrees. The unusual high temperature in the Baguio would post a big threat the city’s tourism. Thousands of tourist visit Baguio for its cool climate. If becomes permanent, the number of tourist visiting the city may drop. There are certain fruits and plants that could only be grown in Baguio. If the high temperature brought by the droughts continues, the plants and fruits may be ruined. The hottest temperature recorded in Baguio was at 29 degrees Celsius on April 22, 1990 and April 4, 1981.

But Baguio is still the place to be for those who want to escape the scorching heat. The temperature during the late afternoons and early morning are still within an average of 14 to 16 degrees Celsius. So you could still enjoy the cold winds of Baguio despite the droughts.

Droughts threatens Philippines’ water supply.

It hasn’t rain much since September last year. The country is under a dry spell which is predicted to last until July. According to the Philippine Atmospheric Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa), Benguet, Batanes, Isabela, Cagayan, Bulacan, Nueva Ecija, Nieva Viscaya, Pampanga, Batangas, Iloilo, Antique, Negros Occidental and Guimaras are experiencing drought.

The water level in Magat Dam in Isabela continuous to dropped and is 166.51 meters (21 meters below normal) as of Feb 10, 2010. Ideally, Magat dam water level should be at 192 meters. The dam provides the water needs of major irrigation for 80,000 hectares of farmlands in Quirino, Cagayan and Isabela. It also provides the waters needs of the hydroelectric plant in Ramon, Isabela which is responsible for 350 megawatts of power to the Luzon grid. To provide the daily water requirements for the hydroelectric plant and irrigations, water levels in Magat dam should be at least 187 to 188 meters

The water level of three other dams in Luzon are also decreasing but has not reached critical levels. The following dams are Angat dam in Bulacan. San Roque dam in Pangasinan and Pantabangan dam in Nueva Ecija. Angat dam water level is now at 198.61 meters (2.39 meters below ideal level). Pantabangan dam is 2.91 meters below normal while san Roque has a 1.38 meter deficit of the normal level.

The government is looking into cloud seeding and rationing of the water supply in several areas in the Philippines. Maynilad Plans to fix their facilities to prevent unnecessary loss of water.
The drought is brought by the El Niño Phenomenon. If it would last as long as they predicted, the Philippines would face a water shortage. The drought that the Philippines is facing is one of the effects of Global warming. If people were not taking it serious then, they should take it serious now. Everyone in the Planet is affected. It is easier to ignore the issue if the person has not been affected by the effects of Global warming.

Last year, I experienced firsthand how devastating it could be when nature goes wild. It is hard to believe that a few months ago the rainfall during Typhoon Ondoy (international codename) has reached a record high in the Philippines. The Philippines was caught unprepared for the havoc Ondoy has brought. Everyone never thought that it would be possible to rain as hard nor it would flood so extensively.

Weird Footbridge Streamer

On my way home, I saw this streamer in Delta Quezon City. I find it weird for several reasons

1. The Footbridge has been up for at least 3 years, why thank them now?
2. How come the people thanking the president didn't put their name in the streamer?
3. This footbridge was a project of Bayani Fernando when he was still the head of MMDA. The color pink is all over the footbridge. Why not thank him?

I acknowledged that the president did a lot for the country. I agree that people should thank her. But I think they should thank her properly. The people thanking her should have indicated their names. It makes me wonder if this is where my taxes go. I just don't get it. What do you think?

50s diner

For the past 3 years, my wife and I have been visiting Baguio City during the month of January or February. Every year we make it a point to visit the Lourdes Grotto and the Pink Sister monastery. On one of our trip after visiting Pink sister, we came across a restaurant called the 50s diner. The restaurant was featured in one of the local shows and we were curious enough to give it a try.

My wife ordered a Clubhouse Sandwich and I ordered Burger with fries. We both had fruit shakes for drinks. We didn’t expect big servings and the Clubhouse Sandwich that my wife ordered was big enough for the two of us. The burger that I order was bigger that than the Big Mac McDonalds was serving as well as the Jollibee’s Champ burger. As you could see the clubhouse sandwich is bigger than my wife's arm.

The food was great. The taste is as good  as the the burger from Hotshots or Brother Burgers. The great thing about is that it is very affordable. The burger from the establishments that I mentioned early would cost about Php160 to over Php200. The burger that I ordered from 50s diner did not exceed Php100. It is really value for your money.

So the next time you visit Baguio City, try to drop by 50s diner. It is located in 92 Upper General Luna Road, corner Brent Road. It is near the Pink Sister Monastery and is only a few minutes commute from SM Baguio. If you’re going to take a cab or a Jeepney to the Botanical Garden or Mines View, it’s just along the way.

Davao City's smoking ban

You have to praise the leaders of Davao City for implementing a City wide smoking ban in Public Places. I think a similar smoking ban was implemented in Makati but it didn’t last that long. For the first few weeks, they were rounding up people who smoking in public places.  But after a few weeks more, it seems like that there was no Smoking Ban to begin with. I think the biggest difference is that Davao has created an Anti-smoking task force while in Makati, those who are catching smokers were part of the traffic enforcers pool.  From January to July of Last year, 690 violators were apprehended by the Task force. The Ban includes government and private offices, bars, malls, churches and even Public transportation.

I think every city in the Philippines should follow Davao’s example.  Though apprehending smoke belchers should be a priority too as well as those who burn their garbage. It’s not only dangerous to a person’s health but is also adds up to the greenhouse gasses in the atmosphere.

City ordinance like this helps a lot in fighting Global warming. With the failure of climate conference in Copenhagen, little steps like this would a long way to help preserve the environment. I hope that who ever is elected for public office this May would have a strong commitment to preserve the environment

BlacK Nazarene

Approximately 3 million people flock the streets of Manila to take part in the yearly procession of the Black Nazarene. The procession started in Quirino Grandstand at Rizal Park and ended at Quiapo Church in Manila. The life size wooden statue of the Black Nazarene is paraded on Jan 9 of every year. It was carved in Mexico and was brought to the Philippines in the early 17th century. There are many speculations why the Nazarene is colored Black. Some say that the statue was burned while it was still in the ship that has brought it from Mexico. While some say that it was burned when Quiapo church was on fire.

Million of Filipinos participate in this yearly tradition. It is more accurate to say that this is devotion. Some people believe that wiping the statue with white handkerchief or towel would some how carry away some healing powers. Some people believe that touching the statue would bring them good fortune. Every devotee has their own intentions and some believe that touching the statue would grant there prayers. This is the reason why many would risk being injured or even risk their lives just to touch the Black Nazarene.

Several people were injured during the procession. Some fainted due to dehydration, hunger and exhaustion while some obtained hand, legs and feet injury. Unfortunately, two fatalities were reported. One died due to heart attack while the other died of head injury after falling from the Black Nazarene Carriage.

While researching more about this topic, I came across a website that criticizes this 200 year old tradition calling it a silly religious event. While I was reading the post further, a line from a movie came to mind. “Faith is gift that I have yet to receive”. Everyone is entitled to their own faith. Not everyone believes in miracles or devotions. The writer is entitled to his opinion the same way the devotees are entitled to their beliefs.
