Is your face sounds familiar Philippines a fair competition?

For the last 12 weeks I have been watching this show. And I am impressed with the performances. Well most of them at least. So why do I ask if your face sounds familiar is a fair competition? First of all. The producers seems to be biased with some of the artist. Tutti is always impersonating rock stars. Maxene is mostly impersonating rappers and Karla is always impersonating Divas. Most impersonators are given task that they are very well familiar with. While some them were given the hardest task of impersonating that others. I am talking about Nyoy, Edgar Allan and Melai who has been switching from male to female artist more frequently than other.

Second the contestants are not voting for the best performance but there are voting based on completely different criteria. A good example is for Maxene’ performance as her late father Francis M. I thought Melai’s Rihanna performance, Edgar Allan’s Ed Sheeran and Nyoy’s Sylvia la torre impersonation was better. Last week EA’s MC hammer, Nyoy’s Rod Stewart and Jayr’s Alanis Morrisette was better than Tutti’s Ely Buendia performance. I even thought that he was more Raymund Marasigan than Ely. I think they voted for him since he is the only one left without a win.

But to be fair, they made up for it with the revelation of the top 4 finalist. I think Nyoy, Jay-r, Melai and Edgar Allan all deserve to be part of the top 4. Then again the Grand winner will be based on the highest text votes where the most popular but not always the most deserving ends up winning.

 What are your thoughts?

Your face sounds familiar Finale airs tonight

Last Sunday, the top 4 for your face sounds familiar Philippines has been announced. Nyoy Volante got the highest score with 257 points.  Jay-r got the second place with 246 points. Melai and Edgar Allan are both tied for the third and fourth spot.

I am glad that the two of my picks are part of the Final four which is Nyoy and Edgar Allan. Next week on the finale, the winner will be decided with the highest number of text votes which in my opinion wouldn’t be fair for the contestant. Why? History has shown with shows like American Idol or the Voice that the deserving contestant doesn’t usually end up bagging the title.

I hope they would change the criteria to 50% judge’s vote and 50% text voting. This way at least those without a huge fan base wouldn’t end up winning. Remember Voice Philippines last two winners? Since Sarah Geronimo has a huge fan base, her team ended up with the win.

Well will see. I kind of reminds of the pageants way back in high school those who manage to sell more tickets ended up winning even though they are not clearly to most talented and most deserving.

My vote is for Nyoy. Since the start of the show, Nyoy has been consistent with his performance and I am glad that he ended getting votes from his co-contestant last week. My second choice would be for Edgar Allan.

Here is what is wrong with your face sounds familiar Philippines

Your face sounds familiar is based on Spanish singing and impersonation competition. If you have seen your face sounds familiar Philippines you would agree that it’s a great show. Here is the problem. The deserving contestant doesn’t end up winning. Why? I’ll discuss that in a bit.
Shows like the Voice and American Idol have the same problem. The deserving ones doesn’t end up winning. For the Voice the winner is based on the number of text votes from the public. And for the past two seasons I thought that the runner up deserve to win. For the voice kids I thought Darren Espanto would win instead of Lyca and Alisah Bonaobra deserved to be the winner instead Jason Dy from the Voice Philippines season 2.
So what is the use of joining if the winner won’t be based on pure talent? So here is the problem with your face  sounds familiar. Although the winner is not based on text votes, the winner is determine based on the votes of the  3 Judges and the votes of their peers.
I think the three judges are mostly fair with their votes. It’s just that during week 7 where Maxene impersonated her father, the late Francis M, they seem to have voted based on their emotional attachment to Francis M. She ended up winning but is she the best impersonator for that week? I really think that there were better performances compared to Maxene’s.
But here is the main problem. Aside from the Judges vote, the impersonators could give 3 points as long as they don’t give it to themselves. And there seems to be a group that is bias with their voting. Karla Estarda, Jay R, Maxene and sometimes Melai are most of time giving the votes to each other.
A good example is Week 8 where Karla Estrada won when she impersonated Ann Wilson of Heart. I thought that Edgar Allan Guzman (impersonated Andrew E) or Nyoy Volante (impersonated Freddy Mercury of Queen) would win it. Before the impersonator’s vote were mentioned, Edgar Allan and Nyoy were leading. But Karla Estrada ended up winning. Is it because her sons was there during the show? Or should we expect automatic votes from here group?
If this goes on I highly doubt that the most talented impersonator would win. So in your opinion who is the most talented impersonator? I'll go with Nyoy or Edgar Allan. What are your thoughts?

Melai wins Pinoy Big Brother Double Up

Picture from Melai's facebook account

I only started watching Pinoy Big Brother (PBB) this season. I prefer watching the Philippine version of Survivor but this season was different. I found PBB more amusing and a lot less stressful to watch than the survivor. The reason why I found it interesting is because of Melai and Jason. She is naturally funny and her actions and reactions were out of this world. They added a comic touch to this season of PBB.

Last night Melisa Cantiveros, better known as Melai was crown Pinoy Big brother big winner. Double up started on October 4, 2009 and lasted for 133 days. Even though I found her really funny, I think somebody else was more deserving of the title of big winner. Paul Jake was my personal bet. It is pretty disappointing that he didn't win. I think he played the game better. He exerted more effort on the task and was regularly helping out with the house chores.

A few days ago they showed the statistics and Paul Jake was leading. I thought that it is great that the people are voting for him because he truly deserved to be the winner. I just didn't know why ABS-CBN showed the stats. Was it to show Melai fans that she was just second and needed votes to win. Or was it to make a twist or to add to drama to the big night? Who knows?

Since Melai and Jason are in some sort of relationship, they were both package as one. Paul Jake was the 2nd big winner but Jason seems to be getting more attention than him. It's not that I don't like Jason but he was asleep most of the time. He wasn't doing house chores and he didn't exert that much effort on the task. I would have wanted Tibo to the 3rd Placer.

I guess it boils down to popularity. It doesn't really matter if someone is more deserving. The more popular housemate is, the higher the chance of winning. It's quite sad how people vote. I guess it is simply how it works. Popularity over merits

Showtime is back!

After 7 days of suspension, ABS-CBN's Showtime has returned on air. The show was suspended due to the remarks of one of its former Judge, Rosanna Roces. The 20 day suspension was cut short due a temporary restraining order issued by the Court of appeals. The show’s comeback was announced on January 18 in Magpasikat, a show that temporarily replaced Showtime during its suspension.

The show has been on air since October 24, 2009 and has replaced ABS-CBN show “Pilipinas Game KNB?”

Showtime suspended by MTRCB for 20 days

Showtime, a popular ABS-CBN talent show was suspended for 20 days By the Movie and Television Review and Classification Board (MTRCB) starting Jan 12, 2010. The suspension was issued after Rosanna Roces. A guest judge, issued negative remarks against teachers on January 7, 2010. She said that teachers are “repeaters”. Stating that teachers are only passing on what they have learned from their teachers. She also stated that teachers does not teach topics students what to learn about.

ABS-CBN has filed for petition to the courts to lift the suspension. The MTRCB has set a hearing on January 14.Rosanna Roces was removed as one of the show’s judge by ABS-CBN’s management as an act of “Self-regulation”. The show has been temporarily replaced by “Magpasikat” until the suspension is lifted.

I personally don’t agree with the suspension of the show. Ms. Rosanna Roces’ opinion does not reflect the views of the whole staff of Showtime. I gave them extra work to come up with a new show in a short time notice. Though, I think they should be more careful and should implement strict guidelines for future hurado or judge to avoid a similar incident happening in the future.
