Sun Broadband Service state: UP Ayala Technohub

I brought my laptop in UP Technohub and I am testing the Sun Broadband service. I am downloading files and browsing the internet at the same time. It is quite slow and pretty manageable. It would take a while though to open a site.

I checked the internet speed using speedtest.net. It takes a while to test the internet speed using this site. After five minutes of waiting, I got the results Download speed is at 0.36 Mbps (368.64 kbps) while upload speed 0.21 Mbps (215.04 kbps).  Based on the Sun broadband panel, the current internet speed would around 60 kbps to 200 kbps. The speed is fluctuating and most of the speed based on the Sun broadband panel would be around 50 kbps. I also tried checking using bandwidthplace.com. Download speed is at 268 kbps (33.5 KB/sec transfer rate) while upload speed 186 kbps (23.3 KB sec transfer rate).

In conclusion, the broadband service in UP Ayala Technohub is around 6 (highest is 10). I encountered difficulty in accessing some sites. I received an "Page cannot be displayed" or "No data received" on some sites. I tried watching Julie Ann's cover of superbass  from you tube and it took me two attempts to watch it. During the first attempt I encountered a "No data received error prompt". The second attempt went smoothly. I tried uploading a video in Facebook  (something that I have been trying in San Mateo). I wasn't able to upload it as well

A long lost friend

Yesterday a friend of mine from college celebrated his birthday. We haven't talked in years and I was surprised to receive a call from him.  Back then we were inseparable. But now we have our own lives, our own group of social circle and have our own families. I guess it's hard to keep in touch with so many things happening to our respective lives.

He migrated to the States 2 years after we graduated. We lost all form of communication. A few days ago I remember that his birthday is coming. Since I don't have any of his contact details, I had to find a way to search for him. I tried a social network search. I checked Facebook but he didn't have an account. I tried his friendster but it seems to be inactive for quite some time. Then I found a site called Peoplesearch. I was surprised to find an email address associated to his name. I wasn't sure if that was his email address but I just wrote him a mail and gave him my contact details hoping to get a reply. And then Voila! I got a call from him. It's amazing! I never thought that it would be that easy to find a friend that you lost touch with.

Early morning Facebook prank

I used to be addicted with Facebook. Everyday I used to play mafia wars and vampire wars. I stop because it was taking up too much of my time. Before I usually spend at least two hours in Facebook. Recently I have lost interest and rarely access my Facebook account. I don't even post any shout outs. I normally access my account when I upload pictures and view the comments. I recently pictures of new born daughter.

Two days ago I received a text message from my colleague saying that my Facebook account was hacked and messed up my profile picture. Normally I wouldn't react but the profile picture that I am currently using is a picture of my daughter. I was really upset. It was around seven in the morning when I received the text message. My work shift has already started and I really couldn't leave my work just to access my Facebook account. I text my officemate asking her what did the picture look like and what were the comments. It took time before I received her response. I was about to go to out decompression room to check my account but another officemate has left post. So I decided to wait for her to come back. Three minutes has gone by and was become restless. I decided not to wait for my officemate and check my account. I was about to open the door when I received a text message from my friend. She said that it was only a joke. It is one of those text messages that you have to scroll down to see the whole message. She got me. I am glad that I receive the text message before I got to decompression room.

My other officemate who left her post earlier returned after 10 minutes. She also receive the same message from the person who texted me. She was really angry. It turns out; she immediately went to the decompression room when she received the text message. We were not the only victim of her prank. Several officemates also receive a SMS and was not that happy. One of officemates was sleeping when she receive the message. She had to wake up just to access her Facebook account. When she found out that it was only a prank, she called up the sender and really scolded her.

I never thought that I would be upset with such a prank. I don't think I would react that way if my profile picture was not my daughter's. My other officemate wouldn't be that upset if she receive the text message at later time or she wasn't awoken by the message. Lesson of the story. Check the whole message first before reacting.

Philippine Congress does not need to pass a Facebook law

Malacanang said that the Congress does not need to pass a Facebook law after Marikina Representative Romero Federico Quimbo filed resolution 184 which is suppose to regulate internet use in government offices. Quimbo also states that the productivity and quality of service of Government employees might be affected. He also added that regulation of internet use in government office would trim down the electric bills of government offices. The bill does not only target social network site Facebook but it also involves Twitter.

First of all, I don't have internet access in my own work post. And I am glad that there isn't.  I think I would be tempted to browse the internet if I do have that access. I really don't need to access to Facebook during office hours. Maybe if I am the person updating the Facebook page of my company then I would be excuse in having that access. I just don't see how Facebook would beneficial with my work. The Facebook Chat option is very beneficial but we could always use phones and E-mail to communicate. Twitter on the other is good messaging service that could disseminate information fast. But I think it could be replaced by any messenger service that office are already using.

Don't get me wrong. I am not going after twitter and facebook. I do have my account. But for government employees to access those social networking sites during office hours is just not right. I think it is not necessary to pass a law just to regulate internet use in government offices. I think respective head of department could simply send a memo or make a new policy.

Discovering Twitter

I am so outdated. Twitter has been on the internet for years and I haven't even bothered trying to learn about the features. I fell like everybody is using MP3 players while I am still stuck with a walkman. I always thought that it was not that useful but after reading a fews posts on different blogs, I decided to give it a try. They say that it could really bring traffic to a blog. Might as well try it. And if it doesn't work out there is always the delete widget option. While I was searching my blog using Google, I have discovered that a few of my post were retweeted. (is that even the right term?). So I asked myself why do people even bother?

So what is twitter? It is a social networking site like Facebook. It is similar to a shout out in Facebook. At first I found the site unattractive. Compare to Facebook where you could see face and other information of the person doing the shout out , Twitter is a lot more simple. Twitting is like sending a text messages to all those in your list. You could reach a lot more people faster if you have a lot friends linked to your account.

I haven't fully utilized their service and I am still experimenting with it. Right now I am using to promote my blog and attract traffic. I have just added a tweet this option in my blog. It is quite boring though if you do not have that much friend in twitter. Anyway let's see how it goes and i'll tell you the  result of my experiment.

Protect your Facebook account

Almost everybody I know owns a facebook account. Everybody is so hook with the games that Facebook offers and is the reason why the site is now number 1 among all the networking sites. It’s amazing that it took Facebook only a few years to eclipse his biggest rival in the social networking sites, Friendster. But since Facebook population has grown, so are the identity thieves out there.

It is not good to flag every single detail about your life on the internet like your birthday, the name of your spouse, family and even your children. You could modify certain information in your profile to keep your identity safe. To modify your birthday, go to your profile page and then you will see an info tab. Click that. And then click on the edit information and then under the Basic Information section, you option whether or not to show your birthday or show only the month and day.

You could also restrict your photos, personal and family information. You have a choice to limit sharing your personal information and photos. Simply go to search sections of your privacy controls and select only friends for Facebook. This would prevent people you don’t know having a facebook or anyone browsing the internet in your personal information. Hope anyone finds this useful

How much time do you spend on Facebook?

It is amazing how much time people spend on Facebook. People spend at least a minimum of 30 minutes updating their profiles, posting comments, harvesting their farm on Farmville or doing missions in Mafia wars or Vampire wars. Another amazing thing is that a few years ago, Facebook is virtually non-existence. It is one of those ideas that you wish that you thought first. Before Facebook, there was Friendster, my space and multiply. In less than two years, Facebook managed to surpass the other social networking sites.

My workplace has a decompression room or referred as “decom” to people working here. It has 10 computers that allow access to the internet and popular games like counterstrike of Warcraft. I usually visit the decom on my break but most of the time all seats are taken. Majority of the users are accessing Facebook. Some people, who finished their shift, spend at least another hour updating their Facebook account.

I also used to be addicted to Mafia wars and Vampire wars. I spend a lot of more playing games in Facebook than checking my profiles. In my opinion, the games and the real time chat service that Facebook offers is the reason why Facebook is better than the other Social networking sites.
I read in an article in Manila Times titled “2009: the year of the Twitter and Facebook” that there are at least 350 million Facebook members. Scott Stanzel a former deputy press secretary during George W. Bush’s administration said” if Facebook was a country it would be the fourth most populous nation," It  is said that Facebook tripled their size in 2009. This is big achievement considering that the Friendster used to monopolize the social networking arena.

A lot of people are using Facebook to get their message faster and at a wider audience. Political aspirants are taking advantage of the advertising feature of this site since the laws does not cover campaigning over the internet.
