Vietnam fears Bird Flu Outbreak

On January 15, an outbreak began in Ha Tinh while 5 other provinces in Vietnam have recorded cases of the virus. More 14,000 chickens and ducks were slaughtered as a counter measure to prevent the further dissemination the Bird Flu. The Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development has decided to conduct such actions after 3600 chicken and ducks were found contaminated

Poultry is one of the favorite dishes serve during the Tet or the Vietnamese New year. The government fears that the center of the country as well as the southern Mekong Delta is at risk of transmission of the Virus since more animals would be slaughtered and transported during the feast. 

Vietnam is second to Indonesia with the highest total number of deaths due to Avian Influenza or Bird Flu. The total number of death in Vietnam has reached 57. The last Bird Flu fatality was on December 2009. A total of 5 people lost their lives last year in Vietnam.
