August 26 Flooding in the Philippines

I was on my way home from SM North EDSA last August 26, 2010. I never thought that a few minutes of rain could cause that much flooding. Some people may easily point the blame on Global warming for the flooding that day. But I think poor waste management is also responsible. Of course climate change is also a factor since the amount of rainfall was not usual but we also have to realize that by simply throwing away a small candy rapper could contribute to the garbage that is clogging our drainage system.  Check out the photos that I took using my mobile phone.

Make Money Online: Link from Blog

As I was browsing the web for a way to make money only, I came across this site which is quite promising. Link for blog is paid review service that allows bloggers to earn money online by creating review about various goods and services. Unlike other paid review site, Link from blog allows bloggers without their own domain (for example .info, .com, etc.) to earn online. And their referral service allows you to earn $50 per valid referral. Another great thing about this site is that Link from blog does not get commission for your work. Unlike other paid review sites where at least 50% of your earnings goes to the site, Link from guarantees 0% commission from bloggers. They also don’t charge for money withdrawals. This is a great site for those who are just starting to earn online.

But this site does not only favor bloggers. They also offer great service for advertisers. You could ask bloggers to create a review about your site. They could find blogs that would meet their needs. Advertisers could easily search blogs with a high Pagerank, Alexa ranking and high number of visitors.  Link from blog also guarantees that they offer the lowest price in advertising your site, products or services.

I am still new to this paid review site. I'll write a post after I learn more about it.

Number of Dengue infections on the rise in the Philippines

Dengue is one the things that Filipinos dread especially when the rainy season starts. Last year the number of people who were infected with Dengue is higher compared to previous years. The media was  more focus on the new strain of swine flu virus or AH1N1 while Health officials were finding a ways to stop AH1N1 spreading further. But Dengue has claimed more lives than the swine flu.

Laguna health officers has not declared an dengue outbreak in the province but deeply concerned with the rapid rise of number of people infected with the mosquito-borne diseases. There are a total of 1055 cases of dengue infection as of August 21, 2010. Health officer Dr. Alsaneo Lagos said that the situation in Laguna is not yet an outbreak since the cases were not concentrated in a single area.

Eight fatalities were reported in the last three weeks. The casualties were from two cities: Calamba and Binan and from 4 towns: Cavinti, Sta. Cruz, Pagsanjan and Majayjay. The Laguna provincial government has already started prevented measures such as mist spraying in waterways, distribution of mosquito nets and mosquito repellent in towns being monitored with dengue cases.

In Albay, a dengue task force was created to prevent an outbreak.  645 cases of dengue infections were recorded during the first seven months of the year. The province has adopted a color coding system to classify the severity of the dengue infection. Red is for areas with an outbreak, Code Yellow is for hot spots while green are for those areas with an alarming increase in number of dengue cases. So far there are no outbreak in Albay. Washington drive, Legazpi City and Barangay 16 are under code yellow while Barangays Arimbay, Buragwus, Sagpon and San Roque in Legazpi City, Barangay Sagpon in Daraga and Barangay in Tiwi are areas with increasing number of dengue cases.

Climate change not solely to blame for Asia's massive floodin

Flooding is not uncommon but recent flooding in Philippines and Pakistan has shown that it might intensify in the future. Pakistan recently was hit by a massive flood that has claimed the lives of at least 1400 people. Last year Typhoon Ondoy (International name Ketsana) caused massive flooding that has submerged eighty percent of Metro Manila and killed at least 400 people. It is said the amount of rainfall in the Philippines during Typhoon has been  the highest in the last four decades.  Asian Leaders easily point the finger to climate change. Of course climate change is a big factor but it is not the only reason. People seem to ignore the fact that human activities are also a factor to the flooding.

Human Activities such as deforestation is one of the reasons why the frequency of flooding increases. A study by Australia’s Charles Darwin University and National University of Singapore stated that 10 percent decrease in forests is the reason why the frequency of floods increase by four to twenty eight percent.

Another factor is Pollution. Millions of homes have been erected along flood plains and water sources. Large amount of garbage are improperly dispose especially in the Metro Manila area. Garbage disposal has been a problem and no concrete solution has been proposed or made in the last few years. The garbage clogged up the sewage and waterways magnifies the flooding.

Waste management has always been a problem in the Philippines. Public officials have always had a problem in finding a suitable place to dump Metro Manila’s garbage. They should look on how to improve waste management. Proper land management is also needed to minimize pollution along flood plains. But the most important thing that they have to monitor is the deforestation. Illegal logging has been  a problem for years. They should create strict laws on how to deal with this problem and assign people to management the country’s natural resources properly. Planting one three at a time may seem like a lost cause. But the China reforestation efforts in the 1980s is one the reason why forest cover in Asia is somehow increasing.

Ateneo avenge 1st round defeat against La Salle

I did not graduate from any schools in UAAP but I always enjoy watching basketball games between Ateneo and La Salle. For some reason, I have always rooted for Ateneo and I was disappointed with their lost against La Salle during the first round of the Elimination this season. Ateneo got their revenge and gave La Salle a beating with a end of day score of 74-57. Player of the game is Ateneo Blue Eagles' Kirk Long who contributed 22 points. 15632 spectators watch the game live and is a proof that the rivalry between Ateneo and La Salle is still very much alive.

It was low scoring first quarter. The Blue eagles' defense held the Archers to only 11 points. Ateneo on the other hand got 19 points with Kirk Long contributing nine points in the first quarter by downing 3 out three of his three point shots.

La Salle's offence did not pick up in the second quarter. 3 minutes and 46 seconds has gone by and the Archers was still scoreless. Ateneo held La Salle to only ten points in this quarter and ending the 1st half  with a score of 39-21 favoring Ateneo. La Salle's starters have a combined points of nine points compared to Ateneo's 29. Ateneo also scored more beyond the three point mark downing four out of 11 attempted three point shots. La Salle only scored one out of 11 three point attempts in the first half.

The story was pretty much the same in the second half. La Salle however has scored 18 points each during the 3rd and 4th quarter. Ateneo scored 22 points in the third quarter while La Salle held Ateneo to only 13 points in the fourth.

The is the 65th time La Salle and Ateneo met in the hard court. La Salle still leads against their rivals in terms of games won. La Salle has won 34 games against Ateneo while today Ateneo got their 31st win against La Salle.

Ateneo's win against La Salle today put them on the second place with a 8-2 win loss record. La Salle dropped to the fourth place with a 6-4 win loss record. FEU still leads losing only one game out of ten outing while 3rd place Adamson University has won seven games out of ten outing.

Effects of Global warming this century

The planet is getting warmer. The temperature for the last five years has been the hottest in History. Some people believe that human activity is the main culprit for the planet’s rising temperature while some choose to ignore the signs. I am not a scientist but I know that the climate is changing and it is changing rapidly based on the worldwide abnormal weather behavior in the last few years. Storms are getting stronger. The amount of rainfall has increased in some countries and has decreased in others. Last year the Philippines was hit by Typhoon Ondoy (International name Ketsana), and the amount of rainfall has caused massive flooding in several urban cities. Marikina City was severely hit and according to residence, it hasn’t rain like that in the last 40 years.

Just this year, 14 million Pakistanis had to be evacuated away for their homes due to massive flooding. 12 inches (300 millimeters) was poured in one 36-hour period and is considered as the heaviest monsoon rains in Pakistan. 2007 IPCC report has said that Pakistan is expected to experience greater flooding this century and rains have grown heavier in the last 40 years over North Pakistan
China is also experiencing the worst floods in decades. The recent floods have claimed the lives of 1,100 people while 600 people are still missing. According to the 2007 IPCC report, a 33 percent increased in the amount of rainfall in Northwest China since 1961 was recorded. Nationwide flooding in China has also increase significantly since 1950 and is still forecast the flooding would be more frequent this century.

In the Iowa United States, three nights of rain has caused hundreds of people to evacuate their home.  International climate panel also projects stronger rainfall this century in the United States (except for states located in the Southwest of the country)

This year Russia has experience the hottest summer ever recorded where Moscow temperature s has reached as high as 100 degrees Fahrenheit (37.8 degrees Celsius). Massive wildfires erupted that has cause toxic smog to blanket Moscow for six days.

Just recently a large mass broke off from Greenland’s Petermann Glacier. It estimated that ice mass could hold enough amount of water to fulfill the tap water supply requirements of the whole of United States for 120 days. Melting of the large of miss is causing the 60 percent accelerating rise in Sea levels worldwide.

There are still a lot of people out there who doesn’t believe that Global warming is true. Some believe that the Human activities are not the cause for the increase in the Planet’s temperature and that it is natural occurrence for the temperature to rise. I believe otherwise. I think that the planet has limits. Humans are taking away too much from the planet and in return the only thing that we give is pollution. Humans have to take responsibility. We couldn’t simply say that all the carbon emission from cars or coal plants doesn’t affect the planet.  It would cause a lot for government to switch to environment friendly source of energy but they should start now before it is too late. World leaders shouldn’t ignore signs. Climate change is happening now and it is happening at an alarming rate.

The United states may experience 36 hours of darkness on October 17

Rumors are now spreading online and through text messages that the sun will continuously rise for 36 hours on October 17, 2010 in some parts of the world while the United States may experience 36 hours of darkness. The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical, and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa) official said that this scenario might happen. This rare phenomenon happens every 2,400 years.

According to PAGASA, countries in southern hemisphere experience longer days while those countries located in the Northern hemisphere experience longer nights. During the vernal equinox in March and autumnal equinox in September, the planet experience equal lengths of day and night. After the vernal equinox, countries in the northern hemisphere would observe longer nights while those in the southern hemisphere will experience longer days.

He also added that starting September 24, the number of hours of night would gradual decrease as the country goes below the latitude. A whole day of darkness would be experience by countries located above the 66.5 degrees. Normally the North pole experience six months of darkness every year while the south pole experience six months of daytime. During the summer solstice which falls on June 21 or June 22, countries in northern hemisphere experience the longest day and shortest night of the year. During the Winter solstice countries in the northern hemisphere while have the shortest day and longest night that normally occurs on Dec 21 or 22 each year.

Even though a PAGASA official said that the 36 hours darkness might occur, they have not confirmed that it may happen on October 17.

Movie Review: Zombieland

This is a post-apocalyptic movie where majority of the world's population has turned into a zombie. Unlike traditional zombies, the walking dead in this film are not walking slowly but they are running which is a new perspective on the whole zombie concept. The story begins with Colombus, a student of University of Texas who travels to Columbus to find his parents. Columbus follows a strict set of rules which is the reason why he avoided becoming a meal in Zombieland. Colombus is a phobic but what he fears most are not zombies but clowns.

During his travel he meets Tallahassee. A loner just like Columbus and is traveling to Florida. Tallahassee has mad skills in killing zombies and has a relentless hate against the undead. He is a Kryptonite though. His has been searching for a Twinkie during his travels. The two decided to travel together and ended up meeting Wichita and Little rock in a supermarket where Tallahassee hopes to find a Twinkie. The Sisters who has been doing cons even before everyone turned to zombies stole Tallahassee's ride and all their guns and ammunition. Tallahassee was pissed and vowed to catch the sisters. But luck was on their side. They found a hummer and a ton of guns in back seat. They finally found the stolen vehicle but ended up being outsmarted by the sisters again. Reluctantly, the four decided to travel together after a stand-off occurred in the vehicle. Wichita and Little rock wants to travel to an amusement park which is rumored to be a zombie-free zone but Columbus convinced them of taking a detour to Bill Murray's residence in Hollywood. Columbus ended up shooting Bill Murray who was acting like a zombie. They decided to stay for the night  and due to trust issues, the sisters decided to ditch Columbus and Tallahassee and go to the amusement park without them.

Believing that the amusement park is zombie-free, they turned on the power of the park which has attracted zombies nearby. Overwhelmed with the number of zombies that has entered the park, the sisters decided to take refuge in one of the rides. Meanwhile Columbus, who was in love with Wichita, decided to go to the amusement. Tallahassee decided to help Columbus before going to Mexico. Tallahassee used his talent for killing to zombies and managed to kill majority of the zombies in the amusement park.

Columbus was about to save the sisters but had to confront his biggest fear. A clown turned zombie was on his way. Gaining confidence from Tallahassee's line "Nut up of shut up", Columbus broke one of his rules (Rule 17: Don't be a hero) and saved Wichita and Little rock. Wichita eventually told Columbus her real name which is Krysta.

Columbus searched for Tallahassee and found him in a restaurant looking for a Twinkie. They heard noises in the closet and accidentally shot a fire into it. They later realize that it was only rats. They also discovered that the Twinkies were in the closet and was shot up rendering it not fit for eating. As they leave the restaurant, Wichita and Little rock was in the hummer and was about to screw them again. The hummer stopped and Little rock threw a Twinkie at Tallahassee which he consumed in a few seconds. The four decided to travel again to find a new home away from the zombies.

I am not a big fan of zombie movies and when I saw the movie poster of Zombieland, I thought it was not worth watching in the cinema. So I just waited for someone to lend me a copy once the DVD is out. I actually forgot about it and didn't seem like a movie that I would enjoy. I was wrong. The trailer didn't give justice to movie. I really hated the trailer. So when my brother lent me his copy I just said what the hell. I don't really watch Woody Harrelson movies but this one of the I enjoyed watching. He really fits his character.  The movie isn't really scary at all. Actually I would classify it as a comedy rather than a horror movie. The movie didn't give me goosebumps but instead it made me laugh like hell. It is way funnier than the Shaun of the Dead. A movie that I would definitely recommend others to watch. If you love watching Quintin Tarantino's infatuation for gore, this movie has enough violence that you would enjoy.

PNOY says no to divorce

President Benigno Aquino III is not in favor of Gabriela party-list Luzviminda Ilagan and Emerenciana de Jesus' proposal to legalize divorce in the Philippines. However, he is in favor of estranged couples to remarry after being legally separated. In his statement, he disagrees with what happens in Las Vegas where people get married in the morning and gets divorce in the afternoon.

The main difference of Divorce and legal separation is that estranged legally separated couples are not allowed to remarry while people who have gone through divorce are. Before couples are legally separated, they would have to undergo a long procedure to prove that their marriage is indeed irreparable.

In my opinion both legal remedies are does not benefit the children of the union. I think they shouldn't let legally separated couples to marry. Approving such measures would legal separation a few steps away from becoming what a divorce should be.

I know a lot of people who are legally separated or have chosen to have their marriage annulled. Either way their children are the one who suffer most. My friend's child has shown behavior of rebellion as early as 3 years old. I am neither a Psychologist nor do I have a working knowledge with how the mind works but it has an effect on their children. I have another friend whose husband is away since he is working abroad. Her child is somehow is not easy to discipline and doesn’t respond well when scolded. He seems to look for a lot of attention and get jealous of his younger sibling. You could argue that it maybe because of the upbringing of the child but I think that a child needs both of his parents.

On the other side, divorce is beneficial to partners who are experiencing any form of abuse. If the marriage is doing more damage than good, maybe it is ok to have a divorce. However who would decide on this? Who would decide whether a marriage is irreparable? Are the judges equipped with the right tools to make the right decision?

We would expect objections from the Catholic Church. And who would blame them. I myself don’t entirely agree with divorce but to those who are experiencing abuse form their spouse would definitely agree with this. I still believe that marriage is meant to last and every couple should stick with one another until the end.

Steven Tyler is one of the new American Idol Judges

I haven't been a fan of American Idol that long. I just started watching the show when Adam Lambert was competing. I have been pretty disappointed with the final outcome of the winner of the American Idol in the last two seasons.  Adam Lambert was my bet and I really thought that he is more talented than Kris Allen.Last season I was rooting for Siobhan Magnus but unfortunately she was eliminated earlier than I expected.  I hope the next season's American Idol wins because of talent rather than popularity.

With Simon Cowell and Ellen Degeneres the leaving the show and management decided to remove songwriter Kara Dioguardi from the panel of Judges, idol management has been looking for suitable replacement for the 3 vacated seats to just the last remaining original judge Randy Jackson.I really thought that Kara was fit to be a judge of American Idol. I think he is way better than Paula Abdul.

The show's producers have kept it quiet on who will replace the 3 judges but Aerosmith Bassist Tom Hamilton has confirmed that Steven Tyler has signed a deal to become the next American Idol Judge. This would be an interesting season. The seasoned rock star's experience would come in handy. Would this mean next season's American Idol would favor contestant with a rock and roll influence rather than the soft pop ballads? I guess we will just have to wait

Large mass of Ice breaks off Greenland's Petermann Glacier

On August 6, 2010, a 43-mile-long mass of Ice has broken off Greenland’s Petermann glacier. According to scientist, this is second largest glacial breakaway of the Pertmann glacier and is four times the size of Manhattan. It is also said that it hold enough water to supply US tap water flowing for 120 days. Another large chunk of ice broke off the same glacier in 1962 though it is still unclear which of the glacial breakaway is bigger. The Petermann glacier is located 620 miles south of the North Pole. A Glacial geophysicist, Regine Hock, said that the glacial break up is a normal process that happens all the time. What is unusual is the size of chunk of ice that broke off.

Global warming is one of the suspected reasons for the acceleration of the mass ice break up. It is said that the rate in which the glacier in Greenland slides towards the sea is around 220 percent faster in summer than in winter. If the Greenland ice completely melts off, there is a possibility that the sea level would raise by 7 meters or 23 feet. Nobel Prize winner Al gore has stated in his film “Inconvenient truth” that a lot of highly populated low lying areas is at risk of being submerged.

In 2007, the United Nations panel of climate experts said that there are unequivocal evidence that Global warming is the caused by human activities in the past half century mostly by burning of fossil fuels.  They have said that there might be a possibility that the Himalayan Glaciers might all melt 2035. Some say that the 2007 climate change research was exaggerated while several members of the US National Academy of Sciences defended the said research.

Some people choose not to believe that global warming is becoming a big threat to the planet. Some countries prioritize their own economies over the environment. Something has to be done about it. Certain parts of Philippines is at risk of being submerged if Greenland ice melts. It is high time to do what is right rather than what is profitable.

Philippine Divorce bill

The Gabriela party-list group is now pushing for a revision in the Philippine divorce bill. House bill 1799 or “An Act introducing divorce in the Philippines” was filed by Representatives Luzviminda Ilagan and Emerenciana de Jesus. As expected the bill was opposed by fellow lawmakers in the House of Representatives and the Catholic Church. According to De Jesus, annulment is too costly and psychological incapacity (A ground for annulment) is often very difficult to prove. They also state that people that the current option for couple for estranged couples with “irreparable marriage is limited. Legal separation does not allow couples to remarry.

Cavite Representative Elpidio Barzaga said that the family is the foundation of a good citizenry and that absolute divorce would weaken the solidarity of the family. “It encourages married couples who have differences immediately seek divorce, though differences can still be reconciled” Barzaga added. Parañaque Rep. Roilo Golez said “that is like giving a married couple a Weapon of Mass Destruction that they can use against each other even for petty, solvable marital problems.”

I do agree with the Cavite representative. If an option like divorce is available for couples who are having marital problems, they will surely be tempted to seek it and would not make the effort of making the marriage work. But isn’t that the real purpose of marriage. Of course no marriage is smooth sailing. There are always rough patches. But the purpose of getting married is to surviving rough patches and try to work out things out.
On the other hand people who are victim to domestic abuse might need this. There are a lot of women who are victim to marital violence every day. In 2009, 72% of violence and abuse against women are wife battery. All in all that are 6,783 cases in 2009.

The church has been constantly voicing out opposition to divorce. Bishop Oscar Cruz that in the absence of divorce, the church can declare a marriage void if domestic violence is proven. But how exactly would they do that and how long would the process take?

The Philippines along with Malta are the only two countries in the world that does not have a divorce law. However, Divorce used to be practiced under the 1935 constitution. It was removed in the new civil code. Divorce law was removed on August 30, 1950.

On a related note, Senator Loren Legarda wants to the 10-year-old Solo Parents act that gives additional benefits to single parents. Senate Bill 1439 proposes that single parents be provide with 10 percent discount when purchasing clothing and clothing materials for child for two years from child birth; 15 percent discount for baby’s milk, food and food supplements and 15 percent discount for medicine and other medical supplements of a child. This is a good bill. I personally know a lot of single parent who were left by their partners and does not give support to their child. This bill would be beneficial to them.

Another Party-list Rep has given his support to the controversial reproductive health bill which is opposed by conservative lawmakers and the Catholic Church. The bill is deemed immoral by the church and that bill would only encourage the youth to have premarital sex. This maybe true but with the evolution of the internet, sex related materials are readily available to those who are consider to young to learn about sex. I think it would be better that teenagers nowadays are informed and they should be informed properly.

Divorce may have its pros and cons. I personally am in the middle. I believe that getting into marriage one must be prepared to stick with their spouse through the hard and good times. But I understand those who are in marriage who fall victim to abuse. There are a lot of parents who are either Alcoholics, drug addicts and are polygamous. They would have a negative effect on their children. They are the biggest victims of all of this. They will be the one to suffer most. But it all comes down to choice. It all comes down to who will benefit from this law.

Philippine Congress does not need to pass a Facebook law

Malacanang said that the Congress does not need to pass a Facebook law after Marikina Representative Romero Federico Quimbo filed resolution 184 which is suppose to regulate internet use in government offices. Quimbo also states that the productivity and quality of service of Government employees might be affected. He also added that regulation of internet use in government office would trim down the electric bills of government offices. The bill does not only target social network site Facebook but it also involves Twitter.

First of all, I don't have internet access in my own work post. And I am glad that there isn't.  I think I would be tempted to browse the internet if I do have that access. I really don't need to access to Facebook during office hours. Maybe if I am the person updating the Facebook page of my company then I would be excuse in having that access. I just don't see how Facebook would beneficial with my work. The Facebook Chat option is very beneficial but we could always use phones and E-mail to communicate. Twitter on the other is good messaging service that could disseminate information fast. But I think it could be replaced by any messenger service that office are already using.

Don't get me wrong. I am not going after twitter and facebook. I do have my account. But for government employees to access those social networking sites during office hours is just not right. I think it is not necessary to pass a law just to regulate internet use in government offices. I think respective head of department could simply send a memo or make a new policy.

Pretty Little Liars

Since three TV series that I avidly watch has been cancelled (Heroes, Legend of the seeker and Flashforward), I have been searching for a new show to patronize. I came across this new series called Pretty Little Liars. At first I was hesitant to watch the series because it seems like another show which only teenage girls would enjoy. But after watching the first episode, I got really interested.

The series is about four teenager girls - Spencer Hastings, Hanna Marin, Aria Montgomery and Emily Fields - whose group fell apart after their leader, Alison Dilaurentis, went missing. A year later, the four girls live separate lives with different set of friends. The four friends re-established their friendship after an anonymous person - A - started sending message and threatening them of revealing their deep dark secrets. They assumed that A is their missing friend Allison since the mysterious sender knows secrets only Alison Knew. Not long after Police found Alison's dead body which deepens the mystery.

Flashbacks from the day Alison went missing revealed Alison saw somebody peeping through their window. She suspected that it was an outcast from their school (Toby) was the one peeping. Alison being the leader of the group decided to get revenge by lighting a firecracker inside Toby's garage. The four girls were hesitant but Alison decided to pull through with her plans. Alison did not know that Toby's sister Jenna was inside the garage when she decided to pull the prank. Jenna lost her eyesight due to the incident. A year after the prank, Jenna and Toby was seen in Alison's funeral. They suspected that Jenna or her brother is A getting their revenge for Jenna's blindness. They are puzzled though and wonder how anybody beside Alison knows their secrets. They also theorize that it is either Alison's haunting them or she might be actually alive. My guess is that Alison might have a diary or journal that has all their secrets. That is just my theory though.

The thing that I like about the series is that the mystery will get you hooked. I don't know whether there is supernatural things involve or A is just a stalker of the four girls. I really thought that it is another story about a teenager's high school life but it is more than that. It would really make you think who A is. I the series goes well, I might get a book copy of the series tot compare it with the TV series.
