Apple and Samsung doesn't own the Smartphone world

I think a lot of people would agree with me that in the Smartphone world, small Smartphone makers can go head to head with giants like Apple and Samsung. Three years ago it is a different story but today brands like Huawei, ZTE, and HTC are slowly getting a piece of the market. Here in the Philippines brands like Cherry Mobile and Myphone are offering budget phones that could compete in terms of features against the Smartphone giants.

I honestly considered buying one of the Myphone model, A919. Why do you ask? It has a 1 GHz dual core processor, 5 inch screen and an 8 megapixel camera. On top of that you could insert 2 sim cards and use it simultaneously. The price is below Php8,000. That is a good deal with all the features that it has.

Do get me wrong. I think Apple and Samsung phones are worth it. That is if you could afford them. But for those who can't there are lot of smartphone makers out there that you should consider.

Nokia use to dominate the cellphone market before the release of Smartphones, They have been trying to win back the piece of the market that they have lost. They have recently release Windows phone in an attempt to gain the trust of their customers, but gaining the lead in market would not be as easy as it use to be especially small company or start up company has joined the smartphone bandwagon.

Personally I don't think the brand matters. What matters is the features that the Smartphone offers. Some may still give a lot of weight with the brand but why spend all that money if you buy a phone with all the features that you need for less? Well that's just me. What do you think?

Apps to customize the appearance of your android phone

Since I bought an Android phone, I have been downloading and trying out some apps that seems interesting. I have always wanted to change the appearance of how my phone looks (something that I haven'y done with my Iphone) and found some apps that has done wonders in customizing the appearance of my phone.

1. Launcher

Launchers are apps that will help you customize the appearance of your smartphone screen. There are several out there like: Nova, Holo, ADW and a lot more. What I am using right now is the Smart Launcher. It is easy to customize and very pleasing to the eyes. One of the feature that I like about this launcher is that it automatically sorts your apps into different categories. I you want to transfer an app to a different category, all you have to do is drag the app.

2. Sliding Messaging

Here is a great app if you want to change how your messaging looks like. By the way this is a completely different app. I have tried deleting the default messaging app in Android but have not been successful. Downside to this app is that you would receive two notification when you receive one SMS. Maybe there is a way to modify the notification but I still have to discover it. You could also change the themes by downloading in google play.

3. Fonts

Are you tried of the same generic fonts in you keyboard? There is an alternative to your built in fonts. Download a Go keyboard and you will be able to customize the font and the appearance of your keyboard.

I am still discovering the Android world. I will provide more updates and share what I have discovered with the apps that I have download

IOS vs. Android

Which is the better platform? I have used an Iphone for the last two years and have recently started using an android phone. I have found android a better choice. Here are the reason why.

1. Customization

- You can't do a lot of customization with IOS. One of features that I wanted my Iphone to have is to capability to change the appearance. I heard that in IOS 7 that somehow change the appearance but I am not sure to what extent. With Android phones, you could change the appearance by downloading launchers. There are quite a few good one out there. So far I have tried the Smart Launcher and have been satisfied.

2. Apps choices

- You can find a lot of apps in the Apple Store. The only problem is, most of the good ones are not free. with Android, you could find a variety of great apps which are free on Google play. Another great thing about android phones is that you don't necessarily have to root your phone to be able to use some of the apps.

3. Phone features.

- IOS is not particularly fond of sharing data. The bluetooth feature could by use mostly using two IOS phone. This is totally different with android in which you could pair would almost any other phones.
- FM Radio feature is not readily available for IOS phones. If you want to listen to the radio, you would have to download an app for it.

4. Affordability

- This is one of the main reason why I bought an android phone in the first place. I wanted to upgrade  my outdated Iphone and would cost a lot of money to buy am Iphone 5 or Iphone 4s. Not to mention that they might release another Iphone within the year. Who knows?

Are you an Android user or an IOS user? What are your thoughts?

The Alcatel Idol One touch  available by getting postpaid plan 600 with Sun Cellular. Now please note that the Idol release here in the Philippines is just single sim. Many people, myself included thought that it would come in with dual sim. Also the sun cellular release on comes with Slate color back cover.

Here is some things that I've noticed.

Bluetooth - I tried pairing with a Samsung Galaxy phone but it did not work. I am not sure If this holds true only for the Samsung Galaxy Y or all Samsung Phones. Ironically it worked with my Iphone. Normally the Iphone's bluetooth does not recognize other phones except if it is an IOS device.

Battery: It is what you would expect from a smartphone. With consistent use of wifi the battery would last for a day. When I used it watching Movies, I had to to make an extra charge to make through the day. However this what I noticed. I know it is not ideal to use your phone while charging, but Alcatel Idol heats up real fast when I did it. When I was using my Iphone I never experience that problem. Even when I continuously play Candy Crush without charging, it heats up fast.

Touch screen: When I am playing candy crush, and swipe the screen from left to right and vise versa, I encounter some lag or sometimes it does not respond at all. I have to swipe it again to make the move. But other than that it works fine. I am not sure if this is caused by the free screen protector that they provide. There are fingerprint smudges all the time and I have to clean every now and then.

Camera:

Here are some of the sample camera photos that I have taken. I think it is great when i take photos during the day. I still have to test how it fares during night and still have to test the front camera

I'll end it now and provide further updates in the coming weeks since I just got the phone and still testing it out. Please stay tuned. What do you think of the Alcatel One touch Idol
