The Walking Dead Pilot: Days Gone Bye

If you're tired of the current trend on Vampire movies or TV series and looking for an alternative, The Walking Dead is a good show to check out. The series is based one of the top-selling comics released by Image. It tells the story of survival in a Post-apocalyptic world filled with Zombies.

Deputy Sheriff Rick Grimes woke in a hospital bed after being confined due to a gunshot wound. The flower that his partner brought when he visited earlier was already withered. After several attempts to call for help, he made his way outside his room. There hospital seems abandoned and he came across a room that says "Don't Open Dead Inside". When he got out of the hospital, he saw hundred of bodies covered in sheets.

He then went to his house with the hope of finding his wife Lori and his son Carl. But before getting to his house he encountered a decaying body of a woman who’s missing the lower part of her body and was crawling towards him. He then escaped using a bicycle lying nearby.

When Rick reached his house, it was already abandoned. Lori and Carl was nowhere to be found. Rick was then hit by a shovel by a boy named Duane. His father Morgan has just shot a zombie walking towards Rick. But Morgan and Duane were worried seeing Rick's injuries and wanted to make sure that he wasn't bitten.

Later that night, a group of zombies were walking around near the house that they were hiding in. Morgan's lapse of judgment of using a gun to save Rick has put them on risk. Fortunately, the zombies never found out where they were hiding. The next day, they visited Rick's house again. They then went to the Police station and got the things they could use to survive. Rick gave Morgan a Walkie-talkie so that they could communicate in case they need to meet up.

They then went their own ways. Rick went to Atlanta since Duane told him that there was a refugee camp that offers protection and food. Duane and Morgan went back to the house. On his way to Atlanta, Rick was trying to communicate with other survivors. A group has caught his transmission but failed to warn him that Atlanta was filled with the walking dead. He ran out of gas and went to a nearby house to ask for Gas. Unfortunately there was none instead there was a horse.

He traveled to Atlanta and soon was surrounded with a hundred of zombies. He was trapped and was thrown off his horse. The walkers immediately started feeding on the horse while Rick started crawl underneath a Tank. After shooting several walkers, it seems lack it was the end for him. He was about to shoot himself when he saw an open hatch underneath a tank. He then he heard a voice from the radio that is addressing him. The episode ended with Rick stuck in the tank while zombies were trying to get inside. Other zombies were still feeding on the horse.

I can't wait for the next episode. Though I think there were dull moments in the Pilot episode. It wasn't really scary but interesting enough to keep watching. I would like to thank AMCTV blog for the photos. The Cast comprises of familiar faces from other TV series. Sarah Wayne Callies (Lori Grimes) played Sarah Tancredi from Prison Break. Lennie James (Morgan) played Robert Hawkins from Jericho. Andrew Lincoln (Rick Grimes) was part of the hit movie Love Actually

Typhoon Katring might enter the Philippines this weekend

Barely a week after Typhoon “Juan” (International name Megi) left the country, a new tropical storm might enter the country on Saturday. According to the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical, and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA), a storming over the Pacific Ocean has turn to a tropical depression and might enter the country this weekend.

Northern Luzon was hit by super typhoon a few days ago and must now prepare for the arrival of Katring since it is expected to take the path similar to Juan. Magat Dam in Isabela has started to relase water since it is only capable of holding 193 meters water level. Ambuklao Dam and Binga Dam have started to open gates in preparation to the threat of water level increase that Typhoon Katring might bring.

PASASA said that the tropical depression was 2,400 kilometers east of the country as of Thursday. Juan is considered as one of the strongest typhoon to hit the Philippines in years and is under the category-5 typhoon similar to hurricane Katrina that hit America in 2005. Juan was recorded to have a gustiness of 260 kilometers per hour.  Reming with a gustiness of 320 kph hit the country in 2006 and Sening with a gustiness of 275 kph hit the country in 1976.

Juan has claimed the lives of 19 people according to the National Disaster Risk Reduction and management council (NDRRMC) as of 1 p.m. Thursday. A total of 1,015,895 people (211,149 families) were affected by the storm. 23,127 persons are still in 170 evacuation centers.

Now the Barney is offering Ted the Job again although Ted is already contented to just be a college professor. Ted has declined the offer but Barney won't take no for an answer. Barney starts to make his move to convince Ted to take the Job apply his best arsenal in getting a woman.

Robin started leaving Don some voicemail which is violent in nature. Robin told the gang all about it and Lily suggested deleting Don’s number from Robin’s Phone. Robin eventually deleted the number and told Lily that it is done. Unfortunately Robin has memorized the number. Robin was still able to send several voicemail to Don.

Barney even used Marshall to tell Ted that the job was already given to another firm and that he finished the legal contract himself.  But Marshall could stand lying to Ted and told him the Job was still up for grabs.

My thoughts on the proposed K-12

The government plans to put 2 additional years to the 10 year basic education. That current four year high school education will eventually become six years. The Department of Education (DEPED) plans to modify the current duration for high school to better prepare incoming college students with the skills that they would acquire their degree and be more competitive globally in the terms of Education.

I agree with the goal. I think it would be great improve the quality of education in the Philippines. But I have a lot of objections about it as well. A normal family could not afford the additional 2 years of education. You have to consider the additional cost for tuition fees, daily allowance, school supplies and educational trips.

You would also have to consider the Teachers. There is a shortage of Teachers especially in public schools now. There are inadequate number of classrooms and school facilities. How could DEPED solve this problem? Is this the only solution? If they indeed want to improve the quality of education, wouldn't it be better to modify the curriculum use in schools today?

Deped believes that GDP would increase by 2% and that it would be beneficial to society if their proposal is implemented. How sure are they that the GDP would increase? I think Filipino families would prioritize food before education.  A parent would rather ask his child to stop going to school rather than having no food on the table. Adding 2 more years in education would delayed a person from joining the workforce and thus delaying a person ability to earn. I think it would be okay if there is a sure Job waiting as soon as the student graduates. But nowadays jobs are getting hard to come by.

You also have to think about the yearly tuition fee increase.  If the government could somehow regulate the tuition fee increase then I guess the additional 2 years in high school would not be that bad. But tuition fee increase has been a problem for many years and no politician seem to bother to have an inquiry about it. Now that I have a kid of my own,  I wonder how much it would cost to send my kid to college. An education from a reputable school nowadays would cost around P20000 to P40000 per semester. That would surely increase. I wonder how many parents could afford to put their children to college 5, 10 or 20  years from now?

How I Met Your Mother Season 6 Episode 2: Cleaning house

Barney's mom, Loreta is about to sell Barney's childhood home. So Barney asked the gang or should I somehow convinced them in helping him pack his things. Barney's black brother, James is also helping out. As they were packing, they discovered a envelope addressed to a certain Sam Gibbs with their photo of the two of them in it with "Your son" written on the back. Barney is afraid of the possibility that his biological father is Sam Gibbs but James eventually convince him to go.

When they confronted Loreta, she refused to answer their question. So they decided to visit Sam. Before they met him, Barney confess that he knows that Bob Barker is not his father but since he has confidence issues while growing up, he thought that having a celebrity father makes him feel special.

They discovered they Sam was an African American which obviously James' biological father. Then Barney thought that he was meeting his father. He cracked and pretended that he was Sam's son as well. Barney somehow had a theory that the reason why he so good in basketball is because he was black. Loreta told Barney when he was young that he was not picked in the basketball team because he was simply so good that it would be unfair to the other kids. But in reality Barney sucks in basketball.

Loreta told Barney that Sam is not his father and  realize that much of his childhood were filled with lies. Loreta offered to tell him who his real rather is but Barney refused. The highlight of the episode for me is when Barney was butting in with Sam and James' duet. I especially like the part when Barney used a voice box to ruin Sam and James "Stand by me Duet".

The Big Bang Theory Season 4 episode 2: The Cruciferous Vegetable Amplification

Sheldon’s eccentricities are again making life harder for the gang. Sheldon has calculated that he has only 60 years left to live. Not enough time to reach a point where singularity is possible. According to Sheldon man would be able to transfer their consciousness into machine achieving immortality.

So in order to live longer, Sheldon change his eating habits starting from changing Thursday dinner from Pizza night to cruciferous vegetable night. Sheldon started eating Brussel sprouts instead of Pizza. Sheldon also decided to take up jogging. Howard then told Sheldon that Penny was also into Jogging. Penny was powerless to refuse from taking Sheldon as her jogging partner. Later that night Sheldon woke up Leonard and was complaining about an abdominal pain. They first thought that it was appendicitis about the stomachache was only brought about by the vegetable that Sheldon ate.

The next morning Sheldon was about to go jogging with Penny but as they on their way, Sheldon trip and broke his ankle. Sheldon then decided that his body was too fragile and he would interact remotely using a machine that he created.

Leonard, Raj and Howard were with the Sheldon’s machine and were dining at the restaurant where Penny was working in. They saw Steve Wozniak, the co-creator of apple. Using his machine he was able to talk with Wozniak and offered to have Sheldon’s vintage apple computer signed. The episode ended with Sheldon forced to the leave the comforts and safety of his room. He was going the down the stairs when he trip destroying his vintage computer.

Deped plans to add 2 more years in high school

The Department of education is planning to include an additional 2 years to existing 10-year basic education. The additional years would allow students to choose from different specialization in science and technology, agriculture and fisheries, sports, business and entrepreneurship and subjects for advanced placements. The purpose of the proposal is too make education in the Philippines competitive globally

Proposal states that a student would have to go through 1 year in kindergarten, six years of elementary education, 4 years of junior high school (Grade 7 to 10) and another two years of senior high school (Grade 11 to 12). By the school year 2018-2019, all freshmen students is required to complete 12 years basic education to be allowed to enroll for their respective college. They expect to have the new the additional two years in high school by 2016 to 2017.

Education Secretary Armin Luistro said that several studies have shown that improvements in the quality education will increase GDP as much as 2 percent and the additional years of schooling would have a positive impact to society. This new proposal would be an additional burden on the common Filipino family who are has barely enough to spare on education
