Dan Brown's latest book upsets Filipino

Dan Brown's latest book Inferno has offended some Filipinos and the Philippine Cyberspace is at a buzz with the latest work of the controversial writer. Honestly I didn't really have the same reaction as most of my countrymen have. We all know that Brown has a knack for creating controversy. His earlier works, Da Vinci code and Angel and Demons have caused a stir in the Roman Catholic world. So you may ask why I am not really that affected and calling foul the minute I read the news? It is simple because I think Dan Brown hasn't been to the Philippines and even if he did he may have visited Manila as a whole. Yes Manila is neck deep in poverty. Yes it is not the best place in world to visit. But there are more places far worse compared to Manila.
The book described Manila as a city with a six-hour traffic jam, suffocating pollution and horrifying sex trade. There are places that I can think of worse traffic jam, pollution and prostitution compared to Manila.

MMDA chairman Francis Tolentino was one of the first Filipino to react about Dan Brown's latest work. “While we are aware that yours is a work of fiction, we are greatly disappointed by your inaccurate portrayal of our beloved metropolis. We are displeased (at) how you have used Manila as a venue and source of a character’s breakdown and trauma, much more her disillusionment,” Tolentino said. Tolentino has also extended an invitation to the bestselling author to visit Manila

Being populated by people mostly Roman Catholics and other Christian religion, I see why most are offended by Brown calling Manila the "gates of hell". But seriously there are more places in world that is far worst than Manila. I think Brown may have chosen Manila since Filipinos would create a lot of publicity for his book. And calling Manila "the gates of hell" surely did that. His three books: Deception point, Digital fortress and the lost symbol did not sell compared to the Da Vinci Code and Angel and Demons because they are not controversial enough. The Catholic Church’s reaction fuelled people' curiosity and that is one of the reason why a lot people read those book. I just got a copy the book. I want to read it first and will let you know what I think of it.

Pretty Little Liars

Since three TV series that I avidly watch has been cancelled (Heroes, Legend of the seeker and Flashforward), I have been searching for a new show to patronize. I came across this new series called Pretty Little Liars. At first I was hesitant to watch the series because it seems like another show which only teenage girls would enjoy. But after watching the first episode, I got really interested.

The series is about four teenager girls - Spencer Hastings, Hanna Marin, Aria Montgomery and Emily Fields - whose group fell apart after their leader, Alison Dilaurentis, went missing. A year later, the four girls live separate lives with different set of friends. The four friends re-established their friendship after an anonymous person - A - started sending message and threatening them of revealing their deep dark secrets. They assumed that A is their missing friend Allison since the mysterious sender knows secrets only Alison Knew. Not long after Police found Alison's dead body which deepens the mystery.

Flashbacks from the day Alison went missing revealed Alison saw somebody peeping through their window. She suspected that it was an outcast from their school (Toby) was the one peeping. Alison being the leader of the group decided to get revenge by lighting a firecracker inside Toby's garage. The four girls were hesitant but Alison decided to pull through with her plans. Alison did not know that Toby's sister Jenna was inside the garage when she decided to pull the prank. Jenna lost her eyesight due to the incident. A year after the prank, Jenna and Toby was seen in Alison's funeral. They suspected that Jenna or her brother is A getting their revenge for Jenna's blindness. They are puzzled though and wonder how anybody beside Alison knows their secrets. They also theorize that it is either Alison's haunting them or she might be actually alive. My guess is that Alison might have a diary or journal that has all their secrets. That is just my theory though.

The thing that I like about the series is that the mystery will get you hooked. I don't know whether there is supernatural things involve or A is just a stalker of the four girls. I really thought that it is another story about a teenager's high school life but it is more than that. It would really make you think who A is. I the series goes well, I might get a book copy of the series tot compare it with the TV series.

Vampire Diaries: Book versus the TV series

There are a lot of new American TV series that are very interesting. I am always interested with Books, movies or TV series that are vampire related. I have been a fan of True Blood since the first season. I had to find a Vampire series to watch while waiting for the new season to air. I heard about this new Vampire TV series called Vampire Diaries. After I watched the first episode, I had to say that it was not that bad. I heard that there was a book and started to read it. I have read the first four books so far and I have seen a lot of alterations. These are some of the differences that I have seen so far:

1. Elena Gilbert’s sibling in the book is a 4 year old girl named Margaret. In the series, instead of casting a 4 year old child, they casted a guy to play as Elena’s younger Brother Jeremy Gilbert. He is drug junkie in love with Vickie

2. Vickie in the series is Matt Honeycutt’s younger sister. In the book, Vickie is not Matt’s sister and her last name is Bennett

3. In the book, Vickie did not become a vampire. She was not killed by Stefan. She was killed by another vampire named Claus. But I am getting way ahead of myself

4. Elena has two close friends in the book. The first is Bonnie and the second is Meredith. I don’t know why Meredith is not series since she plays a big part in the book.

5. Lexi, Stefan’s 350 year old vampire friend who appeared in episode 8 of the series was not in the book.

6. Aunt Judith’s fiancé Robert, is not a reporter in the book

7.In the series, Bonnie’s ancestor Emily is a powerful witch who was Katherine’s maid. She also sealed Katherine with Magic in the series. In the book she was not related to Bonnie.

8. Damon did not know that Katherine is still alive. The brothers thought that she was dead all along until she appeared in Mystic Falls and killed Elena

9. The Salvatore brother’s were not from Mystic Falls to begin with. They were from Italy. And the character Zach in the TV series does not exist in the book.

If you have read the book, you would be really disappointed. But for those who haven't I think they would enjoy watching the series. I am still watching the series to see what other alterations have they made. It is like a different story. They have only taken the Characters and some parts of the story. I guess we will just have to see how the story unfolds

Vampire Diaries

First there was Twilight and then there was True Blood and now a new vampire series has emerged. There is a lot of Buzz about this new show called Vampire Diaries. I haven't read the books, but from what I have seen in forums and other sources, the TV series differs a lot from the book.

Since I haven’t read the book my expectations are quite low but I have to say that there is something missing from the series. I guess it’s too early to give up on the series. I just have to watch the next few episodes and try to read the books to make a better idea of the story line.

The Lost Symbol

One of the first few books that I have finished reading was written by Dan Brown. I read three out of his first four books. So when I found out a few weeks ago that he would be releasing another books on September, I told myself that I have to get my copy as soon as I could drop by the bookstore.

Today I was able to purchase a copy of the Lost Symbol. I am really excited especially when I found out that it is another Robert Langdon story. I really like the Angels and Demons and The Da Vinci Code. I hope the lost symbol would live up to my expectations.

Hopefully I would finish it within a few days depending on how busy I would be in the next few days. I’ll tell you what I think about in a few days.
