Movie Review: Man of Steel

After years of harvesting of Krypton’s natural resources, Krypton is faced with its imminent destruction. The chief scientist Jor-el has warned the council about repercussions of harvesting the natural resources which caused the planet’s core to be unstable. General Zod has staged a coup to gain the leadership of the planet. Jor-el and his wife Lara has decided to send their son Kal-el to earth after infusing his cell with the genetic codex of the entire Kryptonian race. Zod killed Jor-el but was unable to stop the spacecraft that would bring Kal-el to earth. He and his followers were captured and were sent to the Phantom Zone as their punishment. After the destruction of Krypton, Zod was free. Since then they travelled to different colonies that were previously controlled by Krypton but found no survivor. They instead salvage what they could use include a world engine.

On Earth, Kal-el was found in Smallville Kansas by Jonathan and Martha Kent who raised him as their own and named him Clark. He discovered his abilities as he grew older. Jonathan warned Clark not to use his abilities in fear of humans discovering his true nature. Even in his death, Jonathan refused to be saved in order to keep his secret.  Years after, Clark was wandering and has taken several identities to keep his secret. He learned of a discovery in the Artic of an Alien Spacecraft and joined the team that is investigating it.
The ship allowed him to communicate of a preserved image of his father Jor-el. He explain that the reason for his abilities. Also in the Artic, Lois Lane was part of team investigating the spacecraft. After seeing Clark sneaking in to space craft, she followed him. She was injured and Clark was forced to use his heat vision to cauterize the wound to prevent her from bleeding out.

The Spacecraft has sent a distress signal which Zod use to locate Clark. He demand that the Humans handover Clark or face the consequence. Clark agreed to have the Military surrender Clark. After learning of Zod’s planning repopulating the planet and changing the planet’s atmosphere using the world engine Clark refused and decided to oppose his fellow Kryptonians.

Clark was able to destroy the World engine but was unable to prevent the damage that it caused to Metropolis. Clark was able to defeat Faora and Nam-Ek and was able to send them to the Phantom Zone again with the help of Lois Lane. Only Zod was left and able to adapt to Earth’s atmosphere and learn how to use his abilities the way Clark can. They engaged in a fierce battle that caused more destruction. In the final moments of the battle, Zod was about to kill a group of civilians using his heat vision. Left with no choice, Clark snapped Zod’s neck and killed him.

The military is still trying to find out more about Clark. A sent a drone crashing and told General Swanwick that he is willing to help but it would be on his own terms. Clark then took a job with the daily planet as a reporter as part of his cover.

Like most people, I found that the movie is lacking. It was a good movie but it was not great. The characters were underdeveloped. The fact that Lois Lane learned of Clark’s identity took away a lot of mystery. And it was too easy for Lois to put the puzzle together. Clark’s cover in the end doesn’t really mask his identity. Unlike the previous movie, Superman returns, they provided an Alibi by showing that Clark was clumsy.
Also I found it odd that Superman killed Zod in the end of the movie. Generally Superman does not kill. There are versions of superman in Comics that he does but generally he doesn’t. In TV series version, Smallville, Clark has gone to great lengths to prevent from killing. I think that part of Superman is what keeps him apart from other superheroes. We all know that he is flawed and at times has fallen prey to his dark side but killing is something that most viewers and fans would not approve. The battle scene was good but I think it was too excessive. It seems that he did not mind all the destruction and the people getting hurt.
What I enjoyed about the movie was the first part in Krypton. It is something that Movie makers really dwell upon. We all know that the sun is the source of his abilities but the idea that his cells absorbs them, the gravity is lesser in earth than Krypton and the atmosphere is more nourishing is somewhat refreshing.

There are references to Wayne Enterprise and Lex Corp in the movie. Is this a set up to future superman films? News has already emerged about the possible sequel which would involve Batman. I would guess that Lex Luthor, Superman’s greatest nemesis, would soon be part of the sequels. What are your thoughts?

When Barbie woke up he realizes that his dog tag has gone missing. He set out to retrieve it at the Cabin where he killed Peter Shumway. Junior Rennie has followed him believing that he and Angie has a sexual affair. Out of Jealousy Junior confronts Barbie and a fight broke out.

The radio station DJ Phil and radio engineer Dodee has pick up a transmission between the Military groups stationed outside the dome. Julia heard about it and shared the information to townsfolk using the radio. After Duke Perkins’ death, Big Jim and Reverend Coggins plans to destroy the evidence regarding the propane Shipment. Coggins set Duke’s house on fire but miscalculated and got himself trapped inside. The town has cooperated to pass on the buckets of water to stop the fire from spreading further. Jim Rennie runs of unexpectedly but came back with a tractor to bring down the foundation of the house.

One of the town’s deputies, Paul, has gone hysterically and shot a bullet at the dome. Unfortunately the bullet ricocheted and hit another deputy, Freddy killing him instantly. Paul was subdued by Barbie and was arrested soon after.

We learn more about the secrets of the People of Chester’s Mill are keeping and the lengths that they are willing to do to keep it secret. People are starting to become desperate and people are panicking. I expect that more of this panic will manifest in the future episode.  There more questions still yet left unanswered. Hope next episode we will get more answers.

Sleepy Hollow Character: Ichabod Crane

Ichabod Crane is the protagonist of the story. In the 2013 TV series adaptation, Ichabod was in Hudson Valley in 1781 when he first saw a mysterious soldier with a mark of a bow in his hand. He was assigned to kill that person by George Washington stating that the lives of not only Americans but the whole humans depend on it.

He died but woke up in a modern day Sleepy Hallow. Being gone for more than 200 years, he is ignorant with new Technology and certain social advancement. He is one of the witness described in the book of revelation. He is tasked to prevent for the headless horseman from retrieving his head.

He was married Katrina Crane, a witch who cast a spell on him for his protections.

Ichabod is played by Tom Mison

Sleepy Hollow TV series Pilot episode review

Sleepy hollow TV series is a modern day adaptation of short story Legend of Sleepy Hollow written by Washington Irving. The first adaption was a movie starring Johnny Depp and Christina Ricci released in 1999.

The story begins in Hudson Valley in 1781. Ichabod Crane was tasked by George Washington to find and kill a mysterious mercenary recognizable by a bow shape mark on his hand. They crossed path and Ichabod was able to kill the mercenary but was fatally wounded in the process.

He woke in cave to a modern day Sleepy Hollow. Little did he know that the man that he killed woke up with him now roaming Sleepy hollow as headless horseman. He  has killed three people including a priest and the town's sheriff.

Lt. Abbie Mills  just saw his partner and town sheriff, August Corbin, got his head chopped off. Ichabod Crane just got arrested and was being detained by the Police. Mills wanted to question Crane for possible leads to his partners killer. Reluctantly they visited the cave where Ichabod woke up in. He found a bible buried with him. In the Bible are clues to the Headless horseman's identity.Ichabod learned that he is hunting down one of four horsemen written in the bible.

Through his dream, Ichabod's wife Katrina appeared and warned him about the headless horseman. He will bring forth the apocalypse if he retrieves his head. She admitted that she is a witch and part of a coven. She cast a spell at Ichabod to keep him safe. She also cast a spell at the headless horseman's body and threw in a middle of a lake. Ichabod's and horseman's bloodline merged during their last encounter. When the horseman was awaken, Ichabod was awaken with him. Katrina told him that he is the first witness and he must find the second witness to save the world.

Ichabod went to the church to look for the head hidden by Catherine and her coven. He and Abbie found the head but the horseman was there as well. A gun fight started between Abbie and the Horseman. Her Andy Dunn Arrived but instead of helping her, she knocked her down and was about to handcuff her to the car. Abbie fought back and was able to handcuff Andy instead. 2 other cops arrived and saw the horseman.

The horseman was shooting the police officers but stop when the sun was about to rise. Katrina also said that the only weakness of the horseman is sunlight. Back in the police station, Abbie and Ichabod was about to interrogate Andy but a mysterious beast appeared before they got the chance to talk to her.

Before the end of the episode, they saw an image in the mirror of a creature walking towards the woods. The beast stop and looked at the two. The mirror broke shortly after and the episode ended.

My thoughts about the new show? At first I was skeptical when I heard of the news about a TV adaptation of Sleepy Hollow. When I heard that it is a modern day Sleepy Hollow I got more skeptical. And when I was searching google for images of the Pilot episode, I saw the headless horseman carrying a semi automatic rifle and it got me really thinking if it is worth to watch. I am glad I did. It is something different. They made alterations but I think it made the pilot episode great.

One of the issues about adaptation is main characters being played by someone different. Ichabod Crane was played Johnny Depp in 1999 Movie adaptation. Tom Mison is now playing the role of Crane and we can't stop but compare the two. They are totally different but as a whole I think Mison's portrayal is great. However he reminds me of Colin Cunningham , the actor playing John Pope in the TV series Falling skies.

Casting is a big issue. In the TV series adaptation of the Movie Zombieland, the actor playing Tallahassee, did not live up to the role. Sorry some may disagree with me but it is just my opinion. I think that is one of the reasons why loyal fans of Zombieland did not appreciate the Pilot episode. It is not the same case with Sleepy hollow. Mison is doing a great job as Crane based on the first episode.

There are new plots added to TV series. Witches Coven, The headless horseman being one of four horseman (Death) and Demons. I think those are the reasons why I found the pilot episode interesting. I just can't wait for the story to unfold. So despite the show being a modern day version of sleepy hollow I found the pilot well written and directed. The pilot was written by Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci (Fringe and Star Trek Into Darkness) and directed by Len Wiseman (Underworld films)

I'll give it a try for now. I hope this show last.  What are your thoughts?

New TV series review: Graceland

Graceland is an Police drama series created by Jeff Eastin for the USA Network. Eastin is also the creator of the TV hit white collar.

A group of undercover agents from FBI, DEA and ICE are living together in a confiscated beach house in Southern California known as "Graceland". A FBI rookie  Mike Warren who graduated from Quantico with top honors was assigned to Graceland to investigate one of FBI's finest agent Paul Briggs.

Paul Briggs managed to save Warren's life on his first day of the Job. Later on Mike learns of his real purpose on being assigned to Graceland. Mike is having a hard time distinguishing the  Lies from the truth. Right from wrong.

As of September 2013, Graceland has been renewed for a 13 episode second season.

Graceland is different from other TV series. I got hooked after watching the first Episode. It is interesting to see how the story unfolds. How Mike would weigh his Loyalties with his housemates or his Loyalty to the agency
